Impact of Cosmetic Product Safety Awareness on Cosmetic-Related Health Practices among Female University Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Cosmetic product safety is an important public health concern because the use of cosmetics may expose individuals to substances that can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, eye problems, chemical burns, infections, or other adverse effects when products are improperly formulated, contaminated, expired, misused, or obtained from unreliable sources. Female university students may frequently use skincare products, makeup, hair products, fragrances, and other cosmetic preparations, making cosmetic safety knowledge particularly relevant to their health. However, limited awareness of product ingredients, expiry dates, storage requirements, product authenticity, appropriate application, adverse reactions, and regulatory information may contribute to unsafe cosmetic practices. Cosmetic product safety awareness provides an opportunity to improve knowledge and encourage safer purchasing, storage, application, and disposal practices. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of cosmetic product safety awareness on cosmetic-related health practices among female university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Health Literacy Framework, and Social Cognitive Theory. The Health Belief Model explains how female students' perceptions of susceptibility to cosmetic-related health problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of safe cosmetic use, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their cosmetic practices. The Health Literacy Framework emphasizes the ability to access, understand, evaluate, and apply information about cosmetic products and their potential health effects. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, peer influence, self-efficacy, reinforcement, and environmental factors in developing and maintaining safe cosmetic-use behaviours. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how cosmetic product safety awareness may influence cosmetic-related health practices among female university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise female undergraduate and postgraduate students aged 18 years and above enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible students. Cosmetic product safety awareness will be assessed using indicators such as knowledge of cosmetic ingredients, product labels, expiry dates, batch information, storage requirements, product authenticity, regulatory information, appropriate application, risks of sharing cosmetics, patch testing where appropriate, recognition of adverse reactions, safe hair and skincare practices, and awareness of potentially harmful cosmetic products. Cosmetic-related health practices will be assessed using indicators such as purchasing cosmetics from reliable sources, checking labels and expiry dates, verifying product information where applicable, avoiding products with questionable authenticity, appropriate storage, avoiding cosmetic sharing, following recommended application instructions, avoiding excessive use of potentially irritating products, discontinuing products when adverse reactions occur, seeking appropriate healthcare for persistent reactions, and safe disposal of expired or unwanted cosmetics. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized cosmetic-safety knowledge and practice assessment tools, product-use assessments, and relevant university health records where available. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' characteristics, cosmetic-use patterns, sources of cosmetic information, awareness levels, and health practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of cosmetic product safety awareness on cosmetic-related health practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, cosmetic-safety practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that cosmetic product safety awareness has a significant positive impact on cosmetic-related health practices among female university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to comprehensive cosmetic-safety awareness are expected to demonstrate safer cosmetic-use practices than students with limited exposure to safety information. Awareness may improve students' ability to read cosmetic labels, check expiry dates, recognize questionable products, understand appropriate storage and application procedures, and identify potential adverse reactions. Education may also discourage the sharing of personal cosmetic products, inappropriate use of skin-lightening or other potentially harmful preparations, and continued use of products that cause irritation or allergic reactions. Increased awareness may encourage students to seek professional healthcare advice when persistent skin, eye, or other cosmetic-related health problems occur. However, peer influence, beauty trends, social-media advertising, affordability, aggressive marketing, desire for particular cosmetic outcomes, limited knowledge of product ingredients, and widespread availability of unregulated products may reduce the effectiveness of awareness efforts. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, evidence-based, and sustained cosmetic product safety awareness to contribute significantly to improved cosmetic-related health practices among female university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on cosmetic safety, cosmetic-related health practices, skincare, personal care products, health education, consumer health, environmental health, women's health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, universities, university health centres, dermatologists, pharmacists, public health practitioners, cosmetology professionals, student organizations, consumer protection groups, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting safer cosmetic use. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening cosmetic product safety education in universities, improving students' awareness of cosmetic ingredients and regulatory information, promoting responsible cosmetic purchasing and use, increasing awareness of cosmetic-related adverse health effects, encouraging appropriate healthcare-seeking, and strengthening consumer protection measures for cosmetic products across Nigeria.
