Impact of Drug Abuse Education on Drug Abuse Prevention Practices among University Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Drug misuse is an important public health concern among university students in Nigeria and may have adverse effects on students' physical health, mental health, academic performance, social relationships, safety, and future occupational functioning. University students may be exposed to psychoactive substances through peer influence, social pressures, experimentation, availability of substances, academic stress, financial difficulties, and other personal or environmental factors. Limited knowledge of the health and social consequences of drug misuse, misconceptions about psychoactive substances, and inadequate awareness of prevention and support services may increase vulnerability to harmful substance use. Drug abuse education provides an opportunity to equip university students with accurate information and practical skills for understanding drug-related risks, resisting peer pressure, making healthy decisions, recognizing early signs of problematic substance use, supporting affected peers, and accessing appropriate prevention and treatment services. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of drug abuse education on drug abuse prevention practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Learning Theory, and the Theory of Planned Behavior. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of susceptibility to drug-related harm, perceived severity of consequences, perceived benefits of prevention, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their adoption of drug abuse prevention practices. Social Learning Theory emphasizes how substance-related and preventive behaviours may be acquired through observation, imitation, reinforcement, and interactions with peers and other social groups. The Theory of Planned Behavior explains how students' attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and behavioural intentions may influence their decisions regarding drug use and prevention. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how drug abuse education may influence drug abuse prevention practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, faculties, departments, and eligible students. Drug abuse education will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured educational sessions, training frequency and duration, knowledge of commonly misused psychoactive substances, health consequences of drug misuse, risk factors, early warning signs, peer-pressure resistance, decision-making skills, refusal skills, coping strategies, stress management, healthy alternatives, drug-use myths and misconceptions, available counselling services, treatment and rehabilitation options, referral pathways, and legal and institutional information relating to drug misuse. Drug abuse prevention practices will be assessed using indicators such as avoidance of non-medical psychoactive substance use, refusal of drugs offered by peers, resistance to peer pressure, participation in healthy recreational activities, effective stress-management practices, appropriate coping strategies, avoidance of high-risk social environments, support for peers experiencing substance-related problems, appropriate help-seeking, utilization of counselling services, participation in drug prevention activities, and compliance with university drug-related policies. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires and appropriately validated drug abuse prevention knowledge and practice instruments administered before and after the educational intervention where a quasi-experimental design is used. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, substance-use exposure, exposure to drug abuse education, and drug abuse prevention practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of drug abuse education on drug abuse prevention practices. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that drug abuse education has a significant positive impact on drug abuse prevention practices among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured drug abuse education are expected to demonstrate greater adoption of preventive practices than students without similar educational exposure or compared with their baseline practices. Education may improve students' ability to recognize the risks associated with psychoactive substance misuse, resist peer pressure, make informed decisions, adopt healthy coping strategies, avoid high-risk situations, support affected peers, and seek appropriate assistance when necessary. Interactive educational approaches involving peer discussions, role-playing, case scenarios, refusal-skills training, and practical decision-making exercises may strengthen students' ability to apply prevention strategies in real-life situations. However, peer influence, social acceptance of substance use, availability of psychoactive substances, academic and financial pressures, misinformation, stigma surrounding help-seeking, inadequate counselling services, and weak institutional prevention programmes may limit the effectiveness and sustainability of drug abuse education. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, evidence-based, culturally appropriate, and sustained drug abuse education to contribute significantly to improved drug abuse prevention practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on drug abuse education, drug abuse prevention practices, university students, substance-use prevention, behavioural health, health education, mental health promotion, youth health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Federal Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission, university administrators, student affairs departments, counselling centres, healthcare providers, psychologists, public health practitioners, youth organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for preventing drug misuse among university students. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating drug abuse education into university orientation and student development programmes, strengthening peer-led prevention initiatives, improving access to counselling and referral services, enhancing student support systems, promoting healthy coping and recreational activities, strengthening institutional drug prevention policies, and establishing sustainable substance-use prevention programmes across universities in Nigeria.
