Impact of Gatekeeper Training on Suicide Risk Recognition among Secondary School Teachers in Nigeria

Abstract

Suicide among adolescents remains an important public health concern and may have serious consequences for students, families, schools, and communities. Secondary school teachers occupy an important position in the school environment because they interact regularly with students and may observe changes in behaviour, mood, academic performance, social interaction, attendance, and other indicators of emotional distress. However, limited knowledge of suicide risk factors, warning signs, appropriate communication, referral procedures, and available mental health services may reduce teachers' ability to recognize students who may be at risk and connect them with appropriate support. Gatekeeper training is designed to equip individuals who are likely to encounter people experiencing emotional distress with the knowledge and skills needed to recognize warning signs, respond appropriately, and facilitate referral to professional help. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of gatekeeper training on suicide risk recognition among secondary school teachers in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Health Literacy Framework. The Health Belief Model explains how teachers' perceptions of suicide risk, perceived severity, perceived benefits of early recognition, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their ability to identify students who may require assistance. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, self-efficacy, behavioural reinforcement, and social interaction in the development and application of suicide prevention skills. The Health Literacy Framework emphasizes teachers' ability to access, understand, evaluate, and appropriately apply information about suicide risk and mental health. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how gatekeeper training may influence suicide risk recognition among secondary school teachers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise teachers working in selected public and private secondary schools across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, schools, and eligible teachers. Gatekeeper training will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to structured training, duration and frequency of training, knowledge of suicide risk factors, recognition of warning signs, appropriate communication, active listening, crisis response principles, referral procedures, knowledge of available mental health services, confidentiality, and follow-up procedures. Suicide risk recognition will be assessed using indicators such as identification of behavioural and emotional warning signs, recognition of changes in mood and functioning, identification of expressions of hopelessness or severe distress, recognition of social withdrawal and unusual behavioural changes, identification of situations requiring immediate professional attention, and appropriate referral of students experiencing concerning signs. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated suicide prevention and gatekeeper knowledge instruments, standardized case vignettes, training attendance records, school counselling records where ethically and appropriately accessible, and relevant school health or safeguarding documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize teachers' characteristics, exposure to gatekeeper training, and suicide risk recognition scores. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of gatekeeper training on suicide risk recognition. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, suicide risk recognition scores before and after the training intervention may be compared to determine changes associated with the programme. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that gatekeeper training has a significant positive impact on suicide risk recognition among secondary school teachers in Nigeria. Teachers who receive structured and practical gatekeeper training are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify suicide risk factors and warning signs, distinguish concerning behavioural changes from ordinary adolescent difficulties, communicate appropriately with distressed students, and recognize situations requiring prompt referral. Scenario-based learning, role-playing, practical exercises, and repeated reinforcement may improve teachers' confidence and preparedness to respond appropriately. Training may also reduce misconceptions and stigma surrounding suicide and encourage teachers to view early recognition and referral as important components of student safeguarding. However, cultural beliefs, stigma, fear of discussing suicide, inadequate access to school counsellors and mental health professionals, concerns about confidentiality, and limited institutional support may affect the effectiveness of gatekeeper training. The study therefore expects accessible, culturally sensitive, practical, and regularly reinforced gatekeeper training, supported by functional school referral systems, to contribute significantly to improved suicide risk recognition among secondary school teachers in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on gatekeeper training, suicide risk recognition, adolescent mental health, suicide prevention, school health, teacher preparedness, mental health literacy, safeguarding, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, state ministries of education and health, secondary school management authorities, school counselling services, mental health professionals, teachers' associations, child-protection organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening suicide prevention within school settings. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for incorporating gatekeeper training into teacher education and professional development programmes, strengthening school counselling and referral systems, establishing clear suicide-prevention and safeguarding protocols, improving collaboration between schools and mental health professionals, reducing stigma, and developing sustainable school-based suicide prevention programmes across Nigeria.
