Impact of Household Emergency-Kit Education on Emergency-Kit Preparedness among Families in Nigeria

Abstract

Household emergencies such as injuries, burns, sudden illnesses, poisoning, severe bleeding, natural hazards, electrical incidents, and other unexpected events may occur without warning and require immediate action before professional assistance becomes available. Emergency preparedness at the household level can help families respond appropriately, reduce delays in seeking care, and minimize preventable complications during emergencies. However, many families in Nigeria may have limited knowledge of essential emergency-kit items, appropriate storage, regular inspection, and correct use of basic emergency supplies. Household emergency-kit education provides an opportunity to improve families' awareness and preparedness for managing common emergencies within the home. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of household emergency-kit education on emergency-kit preparedness among families in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Protection Motivation Theory. The Health Belief Model explains how family members' perceptions of susceptibility to household emergencies, perceived severity of emergency situations, perceived benefits of preparedness, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence emergency preparedness behaviours. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, behavioural modelling, self-efficacy, reinforcement, and environmental influences in developing and maintaining household preparedness practices. Protection Motivation Theory explains how perceived threats, response efficacy, response costs, coping ability, and self-efficacy may influence individuals' motivation to adopt protective preparedness measures. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how household emergency-kit education may influence emergency-kit preparedness among families in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise families residing in selected urban, semi-urban, and rural communities across Nigeria, with eligible respondents being adults responsible for household health, safety, or emergency preparedness. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, communities, households, and eligible respondents. Household emergency-kit education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to emergency preparedness education sessions, frequency and duration of education, knowledge of common household emergencies, awareness of essential emergency-kit supplies, understanding of appropriate storage conditions, knowledge of expiry-date checking, awareness of kit accessibility, knowledge of appropriate use of basic emergency supplies, understanding of emergency contact information, knowledge of household evacuation procedures, and awareness of when professional medical assistance should be sought. Emergency-kit preparedness will be assessed using indicators such as availability of a household emergency kit, completeness of essential supplies, accessibility of the kit, appropriate storage, regular inspection of contents, replacement of expired or damaged items, availability of emergency contact information, knowledge of household members regarding kit location and use, and preparedness for common household emergencies. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, emergency-kit knowledge assessment tools, household observation checklists, emergency-kit inventory checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' demographic and household characteristics, previous emergency experiences, exposure to education, availability of emergency supplies, and preparedness levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of household emergency-kit education on emergency-kit preparedness. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, preparedness scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that household emergency-kit education has a significant positive impact on emergency-kit preparedness among families in Nigeria. Families exposed to structured and practical emergency-kit education are expected to demonstrate greater availability, completeness, accessibility, and proper maintenance of emergency supplies than families without comparable exposure. Education may improve family members' ability to identify essential emergency supplies, organize and store them appropriately, check expiry dates, replace used or damaged items, and ensure that household members know where the emergency kit is located. Practical demonstrations may also improve confidence in the appropriate use of basic emergency supplies and encourage families to develop household emergency-response plans. However, financial constraints, limited availability of emergency supplies, inadequate awareness, poor storage facilities, low household income, and perceptions that emergencies are unlikely to occur may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, culturally appropriate, and continuous household emergency-kit education, supported by affordable emergency supplies and broader community preparedness initiatives, to contribute significantly to improved emergency-kit preparedness among families in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on household emergency preparedness, injury prevention, first aid preparedness, disaster preparedness, health education, emergency response, community health, family health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, National Emergency Management Agency, state emergency management agencies, local government authorities, primary healthcare centres, healthcare professionals, community health workers, public health practitioners, emergency responders, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening household emergency preparedness. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating emergency-kit education into community health programmes, improving public awareness of household emergency preparedness, promoting regular inspection and maintenance of emergency kits, improving access to affordable emergency supplies, strengthening family emergency planning, and developing sustainable household emergency preparedness programmes across Nigeria.
