Impact of Household Water Storage Education on Safe Water Storage Practices among Rural Households in Nigeria

Abstract

Safe household water storage is an important component of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and plays a significant role in preventing contamination of drinking water between collection and consumption. Rural households in Nigeria may depend on wells, boreholes, rivers, streams, rainwater, and other water sources that may become contaminated during collection, transportation, storage, or household use. Unsafe storage practices, including the use of uncovered containers, infrequent cleaning of storage vessels, poor hand hygiene, repeated dipping of hands or cups into stored water, and inappropriate placement of water containers, may increase the risk of microbial contamination and waterborne diseases. Household water storage education provides an opportunity to improve knowledge and promote practical behaviours that maintain the safety of drinking water within the home. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of household water storage education on safe water storage practices among rural households in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Social Ecological Model. The Health Belief Model explains how household members' perceptions of the risks associated with contaminated water, perceived severity of waterborne diseases, perceived benefits of safe storage, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence adoption of safe water storage practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, self-efficacy, behavioural reinforcement, and environmental influences in the development and maintenance of appropriate household water storage behaviours. The Social Ecological Model highlights how individual, household, community, environmental, and infrastructural factors interact to influence safe water practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how household water storage education may influence safe water storage practices among rural households in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise households residing in selected rural communities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, rural communities, households, and eligible household representatives. Household water storage education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to structured education, frequency and duration of educational sessions, information on appropriate storage containers, container cleaning, covering of stored water, safe water collection and transportation, hand hygiene, safe methods of water withdrawal, household water treatment, storage duration, protection of water containers from animals and environmental contamination, and appropriate placement of storage vessels. Safe water storage practices will be assessed using indicators such as use of covered and clean containers, regular cleaning of storage vessels, appropriate positioning of containers, use of clean utensils for water withdrawal, avoidance of direct hand contact with stored water, appropriate household water treatment, proper handling of storage containers, prevention of contamination during transportation, and regular replacement or maintenance of damaged containers. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated household water and WASH practice instruments, direct observation checklists, household water storage assessments, and relevant community WASH programme records. Where feasible, microbiological assessment of stored drinking water may also be conducted to provide an objective measure of contamination. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize household characteristics, exposure to water storage education, and safe water storage practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of household water storage education on safe water storage practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, safe water storage practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared to determine changes associated with the programme. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that household water storage education has a significant positive impact on safe water storage practices among rural households in Nigeria. Households exposed to structured and practical education are expected to demonstrate increased use of clean and covered storage containers, improved container-cleaning practices, safer methods of withdrawing stored water, better hand hygiene, and improved protection of stored water from environmental contamination. Practical demonstrations, household visits, community health education, and locally appropriate educational materials may improve household members' understanding and confidence in maintaining drinking-water safety. Education may also increase awareness that water that is safe at its source can become contaminated during transportation and storage. Where microbiological testing is included, households adopting improved storage practices may demonstrate lower levels of microbial contamination in stored drinking water. However, limited access to safe water sources, inadequate availability of appropriate storage containers, poverty, poor sanitation infrastructure, long distances to water sources, low literacy levels, and household crowding may limit adoption of recommended practices. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, culturally appropriate, and regularly reinforced household water storage education to contribute significantly to improved safe water storage practices among rural households in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on household water storage education, safe water storage practices, water, sanitation and hygiene, household water quality, rural health, waterborne disease prevention, environmental health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, state ministries of health and water resources, local government authorities, WASH organizations, community health workers, development partners, traditional and community leaders, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving household drinking-water safety. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening household WASH education, promoting the use of safe water storage containers, improving community access to clean water and sanitation facilities, incorporating water storage education into primary healthcare and community health programmes, strengthening household visits and demonstrations, and reducing the risk of water contamination and waterborne diseases in rural communities across Nigeria.
