Impact of Peer Support Programmes on Help-Seeking Practices among University Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Mental health challenges among university students are an important public health concern in Nigeria, with academic pressure, financial difficulties, relationship problems, social adjustment, family concerns, and uncertainty about the future potentially affecting students' psychological well-being. Although professional mental health services may be available in universities and communities, many students may not seek appropriate assistance because of stigma, fear of judgement, concerns about confidentiality, limited knowledge of available services, financial barriers, and preference for handling problems independently. Peer support programmes provide an opportunity for students to receive encouragement, information, emotional support, and guidance from trained peers who may be more accessible and relatable than formal support providers. Such programmes may improve students' awareness of available services, normalize help-seeking, encourage early disclosure of psychological difficulties, and facilitate appropriate referral. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of peer support programmes on help-seeking practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Social Support Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Theory of Planned Behavior. Social Support Theory explains how emotional, informational, instrumental, and appraisal support received from peers may influence students' ability and willingness to seek assistance when experiencing psychological difficulties. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, peer modelling, self-efficacy, social interaction, and environmental influences in shaping help-seeking practices. The Theory of Planned Behavior explains how students' attitudes toward help-seeking, perceived social expectations, perceived behavioural control, and behavioural intentions influence actual help-seeking practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how peer support programmes may influence help-seeking practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, faculties, departments, and eligible students. Peer support programmes will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured peer-support activities, programme frequency, duration, number of trained peer supporters, peer-support training content, accessibility of peer supporters, peer counselling sessions, emotional support, active listening, mental health information, stigma-reduction activities, referral information, crisis-support education, peer-led awareness activities, confidentiality guidance, and follow-up support. Help-seeking practices will be assessed using indicators such as willingness to seek professional assistance, actual use of counselling services, contact with university health services, consultation with psychologists or other mental health professionals, seeking assistance from trained peer supporters, referral uptake, disclosure of psychological concerns to trusted persons, early help-seeking, follow-up attendance, and use of appropriate community-based mental health services where available. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires and appropriately validated help-seeking and peer-support assessment instruments. Where a quasi-experimental design is used, assessments will be conducted before and after exposure to the peer support programme. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to peer support, attitudes toward help-seeking, and help-seeking practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of peer support programmes on help-seeking practices. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that peer support programmes have a significant positive impact on help-seeking practices among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured peer support programmes are expected to demonstrate greater willingness to seek assistance and increased utilization of appropriate mental health and counselling services compared with students without similar exposure or compared with their baseline practices. Peer supporters may help reduce barriers to help-seeking by providing accessible emotional support, correcting misconceptions, reducing stigma, increasing awareness of available services, and guiding students toward appropriate professional care. Peer-led programmes may also create supportive environments in which students feel more comfortable discussing psychological concerns and seeking assistance before problems become more severe. However, concerns about peer confidentiality, inadequate training of peer supporters, limited availability of professional referral services, stigma, cultural beliefs, financial barriers, and students' reluctance to disclose personal difficulties may reduce the effectiveness of peer support programmes. The study therefore expects well-structured, supervised, confidential, and sustainable peer support programmes to contribute significantly to improved help-seeking practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on peer support programmes, help-seeking practices, university student mental health, peer counselling, mental health promotion, stigma reduction, psychosocial support, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Universities Commission, university administrators, student affairs departments, counselling centres, university health services, psychologists, psychiatrists, public health practitioners, student organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving student access to mental health support. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening supervised peer-support programmes, training and monitoring peer supporters, establishing clear referral pathways, protecting confidentiality, integrating peer support with professional counselling services, reducing mental health stigma, and promoting early and appropriate help-seeking among university students across Nigeria.
