Impact of Sleep Education on Sleep Quality among Secondary School Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Sleep is an essential component of physical health, psychological wellbeing, cognitive functioning, learning, and academic performance among adolescents. Secondary school students in Nigeria may experience inadequate or poor-quality sleep because of academic demands, early school schedules, homework, examination pressures, evening study, household responsibilities, social activities, and extensive use of smartphones and other electronic devices at night. Poor sleep quality may contribute to daytime fatigue, reduced concentration, impaired memory, mood difficulties, poor classroom participation, and reduced academic functioning. However, adolescents may have limited knowledge of healthy sleep practices and the importance of adequate and regular sleep. Sleep education provides an opportunity to equip students with information and practical skills relating to sleep duration, sleep hygiene, bedtime routines, environmental factors, evening technology use, relaxation, and healthy sleep behaviours. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of sleep education on sleep quality among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Social Cognitive Theory, the Health Belief Model, and the Theory of Planned Behavior. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the roles of knowledge, self-efficacy, self-regulation, behavioural skills, observational learning, and environmental influences in developing healthy sleep practices. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of the health and academic consequences of inadequate sleep, perceived benefits of sleep education, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their adoption of healthy sleep behaviours. The Theory of Planned Behavior explains how attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and behavioural intentions may influence students' decisions regarding bedtime routines, technology use, and other sleep-related behaviours. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how sleep education may influence sleep quality among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise students enrolled in selected public and private secondary schools across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, local government areas, communities, schools, classes, and eligible students. Sleep education will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, knowledge of recommended sleep duration, sleep hygiene, bedtime routines, evening technology use, management of caffeine and stimulating activities, relaxation techniques, sleep environment, regular sleep schedules, management of academic workload, daytime physical activity, and recognition of common sleep difficulties. Sleep quality will be assessed using indicators such as sleep duration, sleep latency, night-time awakenings, sleep disturbances, sleep efficiency, daytime sleepiness, difficulty maintaining sleep, early morning awakening, perceived sleep quality, and daytime functioning. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, sleep diaries where appropriate, and validated sleep-quality assessment instruments administered before and after the educational intervention where a quasi-experimental design is used. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic, academic, and sleep-related characteristics, exposure to sleep education, and sleep-quality patterns. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of sleep education on sleep quality. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that sleep education has a significant positive impact on sleep quality among secondary school students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured sleep education are expected to demonstrate improved sleep quality, including more regular sleep schedules, improved sleep duration, reduced sleep disturbances, lower daytime sleepiness, and better daytime functioning compared with their baseline sleep patterns or students without similar educational exposure. Practical approaches involving sleep-hygiene education, bedtime planning, relaxation exercises, evening screen-use management, sleep diaries, and discussions of healthy sleep routines may strengthen students' ability to adopt beneficial sleep practices. Improved sleep quality may contribute to better concentration, classroom participation, mood, memory, and academic functioning. However, academic workload, early school schedules, household responsibilities, examination pressures, evening smartphone use, social activities, and limited parental or school support may restrict students' ability to maintain healthy sleep behaviours. The study therefore expects accessible, age-appropriate, practical, and sustained sleep education, supported by families and schools, to contribute significantly to improved sleep quality among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on sleep education, sleep quality, adolescent health, school health, sleep hygiene, student wellbeing, health education, academic functioning, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, state ministries of education and health, secondary schools, teachers, school counsellors, parents, school health personnel, public health practitioners, sleep-health professionals, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting healthy sleep among adolescents. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating sleep education into school health programmes, improving students' knowledge of sleep hygiene, strengthening parental and teacher support for healthy sleep routines, addressing excessive evening technology use, promoting appropriate school schedules, and establishing sustainable adolescent sleep-health promotion programmes across Nigeria.
