Impact of Social Media Literacy Education on Healthy Social Media Practices among Adolescents in Nigeria

Abstract

Social media use has become an important part of adolescents' communication, education, entertainment, social interaction, and access to information in Nigeria. Although social media platforms can provide opportunities for learning, connection, creativity, and self-expression, excessive or inappropriate use may expose adolescents to misinformation, cyberbullying, privacy risks, harmful content, social comparison, online harassment, and disruptions to sleep, academic activities, and psychological wellbeing. Limited ability to evaluate online information and manage social media use appropriately may increase adolescents' vulnerability to these risks. Social media literacy education provides an opportunity to equip adolescents with the knowledge and practical skills required to evaluate online information, protect personal information, manage online interactions, recognize harmful content, regulate social media use, and make responsible digital decisions. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of social media literacy education on healthy social media practices among adolescents in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Social Cognitive Theory, the Theory of Planned Behavior, and the Health Belief Model. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the roles of knowledge, self-efficacy, observational learning, self-regulation, peer influence, and environmental factors in developing healthy social media practices. The Theory of Planned Behavior explains how attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and behavioural intentions may influence adolescents' decisions regarding social media use. The Health Belief Model explains how adolescents' perceptions of the risks associated with inappropriate social media use, perceived benefits of healthy practices, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their adoption of safer online behaviours. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how social media literacy education may influence healthy social media practices among adolescents in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise adolescents enrolled in selected secondary schools across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, local government areas, communities, schools, classes, and eligible adolescents. Social media literacy education will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, evaluation of online information, identification of misinformation and disinformation, privacy protection, password and account security, responsible content sharing, recognition of cyberbullying, online communication skills, digital citizenship, recognition of harmful content, social media self-regulation, screen-time management, awareness of social comparison, online safety, and appropriate help-seeking. Healthy social media practices will be assessed using indicators such as responsible social media use, appropriate screen-time management, protection of personal information, careful evaluation of online information, responsible sharing and posting, respectful online communication, avoidance of harmful content, appropriate responses to cyberbullying, management of privacy settings, balanced use of social media, appropriate reporting and blocking of harmful accounts, and seeking support when experiencing online risks. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, case-based scenarios, and appropriately validated social media literacy and healthy social media practice instruments administered before and after the educational intervention where a quasi-experimental design is used. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize adolescents' demographic and social media-use characteristics, exposure to social media literacy education, and patterns of healthy social media practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of social media literacy education on healthy social media practices. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that social media literacy education has a significant positive impact on healthy social media practices among adolescents in Nigeria. Adolescents exposed to structured social media literacy education are expected to demonstrate improved ability to evaluate online information, protect personal information, manage screen time, communicate respectfully, identify harmful content, respond appropriately to cyberbullying, and make safer decisions when using social media compared with their baseline practices or adolescents without similar educational exposure. Interactive educational approaches involving case scenarios, misinformation-identification exercises, privacy and security demonstrations, cyberbullying discussions, digital citizenship activities, and practical social media management strategies may strengthen adolescents' ability to apply healthy online practices. However, peer influence, rapid changes in social media platforms, widespread access to smartphones, exposure to harmful online content, parental limitations, inadequate digital literacy resources, and difficulties maintaining behavioural changes may limit the effectiveness and sustainability of social media literacy education. The study therefore expects accessible, age-appropriate, practical, culturally appropriate, and sustained social media literacy education to contribute significantly to improved healthy social media practices among adolescents in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on social media literacy education, healthy social media practices, adolescent digital health, digital citizenship, online safety, cyberbullying prevention, health education, behavioural health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Orientation Agency, state ministries of education and health, secondary schools, teachers, school counsellors, parents, youth organizations, public health practitioners, digital literacy organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting safe and healthy social media use among adolescents. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating social media literacy education into school health and digital citizenship programmes, strengthening teachers' and counsellors' digital literacy capacity, improving parental guidance, promoting online safety, strengthening cyberbullying prevention and reporting systems, and establishing sustainable social media literacy and digital wellbeing programmes across Nigerian schools.
