Impact of Time Management Training on Academic Stress Management among University Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Academic stress is a significant concern among university students in Nigeria and may arise from heavy academic workloads, examinations, assignment deadlines, competing academic responsibilities, financial difficulties, and pressure to achieve satisfactory academic outcomes. Poor time management may make it difficult for students to organize academic tasks, prioritize responsibilities, meet deadlines, balance academic and personal activities, and allocate sufficient time for rest and recovery. Ineffective management of time may consequently contribute to procrastination, academic overload, anxiety, sleep difficulties, reduced academic performance, and increased academic stress. Time management training provides an opportunity to equip university students with practical skills for planning, prioritizing, scheduling, goal setting, task organization, avoiding procrastination, and balancing academic responsibilities with personal wellbeing. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of time management training on academic stress management among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Time Management Theory, the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, and Social Cognitive Theory. Time Management Theory emphasizes planning, prioritization, scheduling, goal setting, and effective allocation of time as important strategies for improving task management and reducing time-related pressures. The Transactional Model of Stress and Coping explains how students' appraisal of academic demands and their perceived ability to cope with these demands may influence their experience and management of academic stress. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the roles of knowledge, self-efficacy, behavioural skills, observational learning, and environmental influences in developing effective time management and stress-management behaviours. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how time management training may influence academic stress management among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, faculties, departments, and eligible students. Time management training will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured training sessions, training frequency and duration, goal setting, task prioritization, scheduling, use of timetables and planners, deadline management, study planning, task organization, avoidance of procrastination, management of distractions, balancing academic and personal responsibilities, and allocation of time for rest and recovery. Academic stress management will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify academic stressors, planning responses to academic demands, prioritization of academic tasks, use of effective coping strategies, management of examination pressure, management of assignment deadlines, control of procrastination-related stress, emotional regulation, relaxation, adequate rest, help-seeking, and ability to maintain academic and personal balance. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires and appropriately validated time management and academic stress-management instruments administered before and after the training intervention where a quasi-experimental design is used. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to time management training, time management practices, and academic stress-management levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of time management training on academic stress management. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that time management training has a significant positive impact on academic stress management among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured time management training are expected to demonstrate improved ability to plan academic activities, prioritize tasks, manage deadlines, reduce procrastination, organize study schedules, balance academic and personal responsibilities, and apply effective coping strategies to academic stress compared with their baseline practices or students without similar training. Practical exercises involving study scheduling, prioritization activities, goal-setting exercises, time audits, deadline planning, and management of distractions may strengthen students' ability to apply time management skills in their daily academic lives. Improved time management may reduce feelings of academic overload and increase students' perceived control over academic responsibilities. However, heavy academic workloads, financial difficulties, competing responsibilities, poor learning environments, digital distractions, inadequate academic support, and persistent examination pressures may limit the effectiveness and sustainability of time management training. The study therefore expects practical, structured, culturally appropriate, and sustained time management training to contribute significantly to improved academic stress management among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on time management training, academic stress management, university student wellbeing, academic performance, stress prevention, study skills, behavioural health, health education, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Universities Commission, university administrators, academic departments, student affairs units, counselling centres, lecturers, academic advisers, psychologists, counsellors, public health practitioners, student organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving students' academic and psychological wellbeing. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating time management training into university orientation and student development programmes, strengthening academic advising and counselling services, promoting effective study planning and workload management, reducing procrastination, supporting students in balancing academic and personal responsibilities, and establishing sustainable academic stress-management initiatives across universities in Nigeria.
