Influence of Occupational Skin Health Screening on Occupational Skin Disease Detection among Industrial Workers in Nigeria

 

Abstract

Occupational skin diseases remain an important public health concern among industrial workers in Nigeria, particularly among employees who are regularly exposed to chemical substances, industrial dust, oils, solvents, detergents, metals, heat, moisture, and other workplace hazards that may affect the skin. Prolonged occupational exposure to hazardous substances may result in contact dermatitis, irritant dermatitis, allergic skin reactions, occupational acne, skin infections, and other work-related skin conditions. Occupational skin diseases may initially present with mild or nonspecific symptoms and can remain undetected when workers do not undergo routine occupational health assessments. Delayed detection may lead to persistent symptoms, reduced productivity, absenteeism, discomfort, occupational disability, and deterioration in workers' quality of life. Occupational skin health screening provides an opportunity to identify skin abnormalities and occupational skin diseases at an early stage through systematic workplace health assessments and appropriate dermatological examinations. Early detection may facilitate timely treatment, exposure reduction, use of appropriate personal protective equipment, workplace modifications, and referral for specialist dermatological assessment. However, inadequate occupational health programmes, limited availability of trained healthcare personnel, insufficient screening equipment, low worker awareness, irregular screening schedules, and weak enforcement of workplace health and safety standards may limit the effectiveness of occupational skin health screening in Nigeria. Against this background, this study investigates the influence of occupational skin health screening on occupational skin disease detection among industrial workers in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Occupational Health Theory, the Health Belief Model, and the Health Systems Framework. Occupational Health Theory emphasizes the prevention, identification, monitoring, and management of occupational hazards and their effects on workers' health. The Health Belief Model explains how workers' perceptions of susceptibility to occupational skin diseases, perceived severity, perceived benefits of screening, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence participation in workplace skin health screening. The Health Systems Framework emphasizes service delivery, health workforce, health information, medical products and technologies, financing, and accessibility as essential components of effective occupational healthcare services. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how occupational skin health screening may influence occupational skin disease detection among industrial workers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative cross-sectional analytical or quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise industrial workers employed in selected manufacturing, construction, mining, processing, chemical, and other industrial facilities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, industrial areas, organizations, factories, departments, and eligible workers. Occupational skin health screening will be measured using indicators such as availability of workplace skin screening services, frequency of occupational health examinations, skin health assessments, workplace hazard assessments, exposure history evaluation, availability of trained occupational health personnel, availability of screening facilities, use of personal protective equipment, worker health education, and referral arrangements. Occupational skin disease detection will be assessed using indicators such as abnormal skin examination findings, newly identified cases of contact dermatitis, irritant dermatitis, allergic skin reactions, occupational acne, skin infections, other work-related skin conditions, severity of identified conditions, confirmation following appropriate clinical assessment, referral for specialist dermatological evaluation, and recommendations for workplace intervention. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, occupational health screening records, dermatological assessment records, workplace health records, exposure assessment reports, referral registers, and relevant organizational documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize workers' characteristics, occupational exposures, screening coverage, and patterns of occupational skin disease detection. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the influence of occupational skin health screening on occupational skin disease detection. Where appropriate, detection rates before and after implementation of occupational skin health screening programmes may be compared to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that occupational skin health screening has a significant positive influence on occupational skin disease detection among industrial workers in Nigeria. Industrial workers who participate in regular occupational skin health screening are expected to have a higher likelihood of having previously undetected occupational skin conditions identified than workers without access to routine screening. Systematic assessment of workers' skin health and occupational exposure history may facilitate early identification of contact dermatitis, irritant skin conditions, allergic reactions, occupational acne, skin infections, and other work-related dermatological problems. Early detection may provide opportunities for timely treatment, counselling on skin protection, use of appropriate personal protective equipment, reduction of hazardous exposure, workplace modifications, and referral for specialist care where necessary. Occupational skin health screening may also enable employers to identify hazardous workplace conditions and strengthen occupational safety measures. Conversely, inadequate screening coverage, shortage of trained occupational health personnel, limited screening facilities, poor worker participation, low awareness, and weak enforcement of occupational health and safety standards may reduce the effectiveness of occupational skin health screening. The study therefore expects regular and comprehensive occupational skin health screening to contribute significantly to improved detection and prevention of occupational skin diseases among industrial workers in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on occupational skin health screening, occupational skin disease detection, industrial worker health, occupational dermatology, workplace safety, occupational health, preventive healthcare, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, employers, industrial organizations, occupational health practitioners, dermatologists, workplace safety officers, healthcare providers, trade unions, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening occupational skin health programmes. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for expanding periodic occupational skin health screening, improving workplace hazard assessment, strengthening training of occupational health personnel, increasing worker awareness of occupational skin hazards, improving access to dermatological services, promoting appropriate use of personal protective equipment, strengthening referral and follow-up systems, and ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety standards to prevent and detect occupational skin diseases among industrial workers across Nigeria.
