Influence of Workplace Ergonomic Assessment on Musculoskeletal Disorders among Office Workers in Nigeria

Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders remain an important occupational health problem among office workers in Nigeria and are commonly associated with prolonged sitting, repetitive computer use, awkward working postures, poorly designed workstations, inadequate office furniture, and limited opportunities for movement during working hours. These conditions can affect the neck, shoulders, back, wrists, and other parts of the musculoskeletal system and may result in pain, reduced physical functioning, absenteeism, reduced productivity, and impaired quality of life. Workplace ergonomic assessment provides a systematic approach to identifying physical and environmental factors that may contribute to musculoskeletal disorders by examining workstation design, sitting posture, computer positioning, chair and desk dimensions, lighting, work practices, and movement patterns. Appropriate ergonomic assessment can help identify workplace risk factors and guide corrective measures such as workstation adjustment, ergonomic furniture provision, posture education, and modification of work practices. However, inadequate ergonomic assessment, poor awareness of ergonomic principles, limited access to appropriate office equipment, prolonged sedentary work, and weak implementation of workplace health policies may contribute to the persistence of musculoskeletal disorders among office workers in Nigeria. Against this background, this study investigates the influence of workplace ergonomic assessment on musculoskeletal disorders among office workers in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Ergonomic Systems Theory, Occupational Health Theory, and Health Belief Model. Ergonomic Systems Theory emphasizes the interaction between workers, work tasks, equipment, and the physical work environment and provides a framework for understanding how workplace design can influence workers' health and performance. Occupational Health Theory focuses on the identification, prevention, and control of workplace hazards and the promotion of safe and healthy working conditions. The Health Belief Model explains how workers' perceptions of health risks, perceived benefits of preventive measures, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their adoption of healthy workplace practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how workplace ergonomic assessment may influence the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders among office workers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative cross-sectional analytical research design. The study population will comprise office workers employed in selected public and private organizations in Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select organizations, departments, and eligible office workers. Workplace ergonomic assessment will be measured using indicators such as workstation design, chair and desk suitability, computer monitor positioning, keyboard and mouse placement, sitting posture, availability of ergonomic equipment, workplace assessment frequency, ergonomic risk identification, and recommendations for corrective action. Musculoskeletal disorders will be assessed using indicators such as occurrence of neck pain, shoulder pain, lower back pain, upper limb discomfort, wrist or hand pain, duration and frequency of symptoms, severity of symptoms, and work-related functional limitations. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, ergonomic assessment checklists, workplace observation tools, occupational health records, and relevant organizational documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize workers' characteristics, ergonomic conditions, and patterns of musculoskeletal disorders. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the influence of workplace ergonomic assessment on musculoskeletal disorders. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that effective workplace ergonomic assessment has a significant negative influence on musculoskeletal disorders among office workers in Nigeria. Office workers whose workstations are regularly assessed and appropriately adjusted are expected to report lower levels of musculoskeletal symptoms than workers operating in workplaces without systematic ergonomic assessment. Identification and correction of unsuitable chairs, poorly positioned monitors, inappropriate desk heights, inadequate keyboard and mouse placement, and prolonged awkward postures may reduce physical strain and prevent the development or worsening of musculoskeletal disorders. Ergonomic assessment may also increase workers' awareness of correct posture, appropriate workstation arrangement, movement breaks, and other preventive practices. Conversely, inadequate ergonomic assessment, poorly designed workstations, prolonged sedentary behaviour, limited access to ergonomic equipment, and poor compliance with recommended workplace adjustments may increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. The study therefore expects effective workplace ergonomic assessment to contribute significantly to the prevention and reduction of musculoskeletal disorders among office workers in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on workplace ergonomics, musculoskeletal disorders, occupational health, office worker health, workplace safety, disease prevention, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, employers, occupational health practitioners, human resource managers, workplace safety officers, healthcare providers, trade unions, regulatory agencies, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving ergonomic conditions in Nigerian workplaces. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for establishing regular ergonomic assessments, improving workstation design, providing appropriate ergonomic furniture and equipment, educating office workers on correct posture and safe work practices, encouraging regular movement and work breaks, strengthening occupational health programmes, and ensuring compliance with workplace health and safety standards to reduce musculoskeletal disorders among office workers in Nigeria.
