INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The Enugu-Onitsha Express Road is a vital artery for transportation in southeastern Nigeria, facilitating the movement of goods and people between two major urban centers. Despite its importance, the road has gained notoriety for its high accident rates, prompting a need for a comprehensive analysis of the factors contributing to these incidents. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (2022), road traffic accidents in Nigeria have become a significant public safety issue, leading to loss of life and economic hardship. This study focuses on the period from 1995 to 2002, a time marked by rapid urbanization and an increase in vehicular traffic, which may have exacerbated the frequency of accidents on the Enugu-Onitsha Express Road.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

Hypothesis I

Hypothesis II

H0: There is no significant role of environmental conditions in influencing accident occurrences on the express road.

1.6 Significance of the Study
