Anatomical Variation of the Paravesical Fossa Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the anatomical variation of the paravesical fossa among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its presence, size, shape, depth, boundaries, and anatomical configuration. The paravesical fossa is a depression of the pelvic peritoneum located on either side of the urinary bladder and is associated with the arrangement of peritoneal folds and pelvic structures. Knowledge of its anatomical characteristics is important for understanding variations in pelvic anatomy and the spatial relationships of structures within the pelvic cavity. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the paravesical fossa using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate anatomical assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying variations in the presence and configuration of the fossa, assessing its dimensions and depth, documenting differences in its boundaries and relationships with surrounding pelvic structures, and comparing the observed characteristics between the right and left sides where applicable. The study will also document notable anatomical patterns that may be relevant to the interpretation of pelvic anatomy. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable anatomical specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Data on the morphology, dimensions, depth, boundaries, and configuration of the paravesical fossa will be obtained through standardized anatomical, imaging-based, or cadaveric procedures and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal variations in the morphology and dimensions of the paravesical fossa among the study population. Differences may be observed in its size, depth, shape, configuration, and relationship with adjacent pelvic structures, while some right-left differences may also be identified. The findings are expected to demonstrate that the paravesical fossa may exhibit individual anatomical variations that should be considered when interpreting anatomical or radiological findings involving the pelvic cavity. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, urologists, gynaecologists, general surgeons, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of pelvic conditions. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating the paravesical region, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data on variations of the paravesical fossa.
