Bilateral Asymmetry of Shoulder Breadth Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study will examine bilateral asymmetry of shoulder breadth among undergraduate students, with emphasis on the anatomical differences that may exist between the right and left sides of the shoulder region. Bilateral symmetry is an important aspect of human body morphology, while measurable differences between corresponding sides may occur as a result of normal anatomical variation, functional use, posture, and developmental characteristics. Assessing shoulder breadth may therefore provide useful information on patterns of bilateral variation among young adults. The study will focus on the measurement of shoulder breadth on the right and left sides of selected undergraduate students. Standardized anthropometric landmarks and procedures will be used to obtain accurate measurements of the shoulder region. The study will also determine the magnitude and distribution of bilateral differences among the participants and examine whether the observed differences fall within expected ranges of normal anatomical variation. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Shoulder measurements will be obtained directly from the participants using suitable anthropometric instruments and standardized measurement procedures. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate paired statistical technique will be used to determine the significance of differences between corresponding measurements. The study is expected to reveal the extent of bilateral asymmetry in shoulder breadth among the undergraduate students studied. It is also expected to identify the degree of variation between the right and left shoulder measurements and determine whether the observed differences are statistically significant. The findings may provide useful anthropometric information on normal bilateral variation in the shoulder region among young adults. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, physiotherapists, ergonomists, clinicians, and other health professionals interested in human body proportions and musculoskeletal morphology. The information may also contribute to anthropometric databases and provide reference data for studies involving posture, body symmetry, physical assessment, and functional movement. It may further support comparative studies of bilateral body measurements among different populations. The study will conclude by providing information on the pattern and extent of bilateral asymmetry of shoulder breadth among undergraduate students. It will recommend the use of standardized anthropometric procedures when assessing bilateral body dimensions and encourage further research involving larger and more diverse populations to establish broader reference values for shoulder asymmetry.
