Assessment of Students’ Ability to Interpret Cross-Sectional Anatomy
Abstract
The study assesses students’ ability to interpret cross-sectional anatomy. Cross-sectional anatomy provides an important means of understanding the internal arrangement, relative position, size, shape, and spatial relationships of anatomical structures within different regions of the human body. The ability to interpret sectional views is important in anatomy education because it enables students to relate anatomical structures to different planes and develop a clearer understanding of three-dimensional organization. The study will assess students’ ability to recognize and interpret anatomical structures presented in cross-sectional views. The specific objectives will include determining students’ ability to identify structures on cross-sectional images, assessing their understanding of the relative positions and relationships of structures within selected body regions, evaluating their ability to distinguish structures presented at different sectional levels and orientations, and identifying areas of cross-sectional anatomy that present greater difficulty to students. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who have received relevant anatomy instruction will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured cross-sectional anatomy assessment involving standardized anatomical sections, computed tomography images, magnetic resonance images, or appropriately selected sectional illustrations. Students’ responses will be scored using a predetermined marking scheme, and the data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of ability to interpret cross-sectional anatomy among the students. Students may demonstrate stronger performance when identifying prominent structures and familiar anatomical regions, while greater difficulties may be observed with small structures, closely related tissues, unfamiliar sectional levels, and images requiring interpretation of depth and spatial relationships. Variations may also be observed in students’ ability to relate cross-sectional appearances to conventional anatomical descriptions and three-dimensional structural arrangements. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, radiologists, medical educators, and curriculum developers by providing information on students’ understanding of sectional anatomy. The study may help identify areas where additional exposure to anatomical sections, radiological images, three-dimensional models, guided image interpretation, and practical spatial orientation exercises may be beneficial. It may also support the integration of imaging-based resources into anatomy teaching and practical assessment. The study will conclude by assessing students’ ability to interpret cross-sectional anatomy and identifying areas of relative strength and difficulty. It is recommended that anatomy teaching should provide regular opportunities for students to interpret sectional images and relate sectional appearances to three-dimensional anatomical structures. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations and different imaging-based learning environments are also recommended.
