Assessment of the Anatomical Boundaries of the Mediastinal Compartments

Abstract

The study assesses the anatomical boundaries of the mediastinal compartments, with emphasis on the structures that define and separate the major regions of the mediastinum within the thoracic cavity. The mediastinum contains important cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, neural, and lymphatic structures, and its compartmental organization provides an important framework for understanding their anatomical relationships. Accurate knowledge of the boundaries of the mediastinal compartments is essential for anatomical education, interpretation of thoracic imaging, and clinical procedures involving the thoracic cavity. The study will assess the anatomical boundaries of the major mediastinal compartments using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate dissection, osteological, or imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the structures forming the boundaries of the mediastinal compartments, describing their anatomical relationships, determining the configuration and extent of the superior and inferior mediastinal regions and their subdivisions, and documenting the relationships between the compartmental boundaries and important thoracic structures. A descriptive anatomical research design will be adopted for the study. Appropriate anatomical specimens, osteological materials, or suitable imaging materials will be selected using an appropriate sampling or selection procedure, depending on the assessment method employed. Data on the boundaries and relationships of the mediastinal compartments will be obtained through systematic anatomical assessment using standardized landmarks and documented using appropriate descriptive procedures. Findings will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage where applicable, while appropriate comparative methods may be applied when measurable anatomical variations are identified. The study is expected to reveal the anatomical configuration and relationships of the major mediastinal compartments and the structures contributing to their boundaries. Variations may be observed in the extent and configuration of selected boundaries and in the spatial relationships between compartmental structures, including the heart, great vessels, trachea, oesophagus, thymic region, and associated nerves and vessels. These findings are expected to demonstrate the importance of recognizing normal anatomical relationships and variations when evaluating the mediastinum. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of thoracic structures. Detailed information on mediastinal compartment boundaries may support anatomical education, interpretation of cross-sectional imaging, localization of thoracic structures, and planning of surgical and other clinical procedures involving the mediastinum. The study will conclude by documenting the anatomical boundaries and relationships of the mediastinal compartments within the study materials. It is recommended that standardized anatomical landmarks and systematic assessment procedures be used when evaluating mediastinal compartments, while further studies involving larger samples and advanced imaging techniques should be conducted to provide broader reference information on mediastinal compartment anatomy and anatomical variation.
