Association Between Foot Arch Characteristics and Balance Ability Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study examines the association between foot arch characteristics and balance ability among undergraduate students, with emphasis on how variations in the structure of the medial longitudinal arch may relate to postural stability. The foot arch provides an important structural framework for weight distribution, shock absorption, and adaptation to the supporting surface, while balance ability depends on the coordinated interaction of sensory, musculoskeletal, and postural control systems. Understanding the relationship between foot arch characteristics and balance is important for appreciating the functional role of foot structure in maintaining stable posture among young adults. The study will assess selected foot arch characteristics and balance ability among undergraduate students using standardized anatomical and functional assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include determining the distribution of different foot arch characteristics, assessing balance ability among the study participants, comparing balance performance across different foot arch patterns, and determining the strength and direction of the association between foot arch characteristics and balance ability. Differences between the right and left feet will also be assessed where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Foot arch characteristics will be assessed using standardized anthropometric, footprint, or clinical measurement procedures, while balance ability will be evaluated using an appropriate validated balance assessment procedure. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine the association between foot arch characteristics and balance ability. The study is expected to reveal different patterns of foot arch characteristics among the study population, with variations in balance performance across the observed arch patterns. A measurable association may be identified between selected foot arch characteristics and balance ability, although the strength and direction of the relationship may vary among participants. Differences in balance performance between the right and left feet or among participants with different arch characteristics may also be observed. The findings are expected to provide information on the relationship between foot structure and postural stability without implying that foot arch characteristics alone determine balance ability. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapists, podiatrists, orthopaedic practitioners, sports medicine professionals, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of foot structure and postural control. The study may provide useful reference information on foot arch characteristics and balance ability among young adults and contribute to a better understanding of the functional relationship between foot structure and lower limb stability. The findings may also support postural assessment, movement analysis, and the development of appropriate approaches for evaluating individuals with variations in foot structure. The study will conclude by documenting the association between foot arch characteristics and balance ability among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and functional procedures be used when assessing foot arch characteristics and balance, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data and investigate additional factors associated with postural stability.
