Comparative Study of Hand Grip Performance Between Male and Female Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study examines the difference in hand grip performance between male and female undergraduate students, with emphasis on variations in grip strength and functional hand performance between the two sexes. Hand grip performance is an important indicator of upper limb function and is influenced by factors such as muscle strength, hand size, body build, physical activity, and neuromuscular coordination. Assessment of hand grip performance provides useful information for understanding functional differences in the upper limbs and may contribute to the establishment of reference values for young adults. The study will assess and compare hand grip performance between male and female undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include determining the hand grip performance of male students, assessing the hand grip performance of female students, comparing the mean grip performance between the two groups, and examining differences between the dominant and non-dominant hands where applicable. A comparative cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Male and female undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Hand grip performance will be assessed using a standardized hand grip dynamometer under controlled testing conditions, with appropriate procedures used to ensure consistent positioning and measurement. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine whether observed differences between the groups are statistically significant. The study is expected to reveal measurable differences in hand grip performance between male and female undergraduate students. Male participants may demonstrate higher mean grip values, while female participants may show different performance patterns across the dominant and non-dominant hands. Variation within each group is also expected, and the findings may demonstrate statistically significant differences in some of the assessed measurements. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, sports scientists, orthopaedic practitioners, and other healthcare and exercise professionals. The study may provide useful reference information for assessing hand function among young adults and may support the interpretation of grip strength measurements in clinical evaluation, rehabilitation, sports assessment, and functional studies. The study will conclude by comparing hand grip performance between male and female undergraduate students and documenting the observed differences in grip function. It is recommended that standardized procedures and appropriate dynamometric techniques be used when assessing hand grip performance, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference values for young adults.
