Effect of Radiological Image-Based Learning on Students’ Understanding of Human Anatomy
Abstract
The study examines the effect of radiological image-based learning on students’ understanding of human anatomy, focusing on the use of radiological images as learning resources for improving students’ recognition and interpretation of anatomical structures. Radiological images provide a representation of internal structures in living individuals and allow students to observe anatomical features from perspectives that may differ from those presented through textbooks, diagrams, or anatomical specimens. Their use may therefore support the development of practical and clinically relevant anatomical knowledge. The study will assess the effect of radiological image-based learning on students’ understanding of human anatomy and determine its influence on their ability to identify anatomical structures, recognize anatomical orientation, understand spatial relationships, and relate internal structures to their corresponding anatomical regions. The study will also assess students’ perceptions of radiological image-based learning, including its usefulness, clarity, accessibility, and perceived contribution to their understanding of complex anatomical structures. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students offering human anatomy or anatomy-related courses will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to relevant instructional groups where applicable. Data will be collected using a structured anatomy knowledge assessment and a validated questionnaire designed to assess students’ understanding and perceptions of radiological image-based learning. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests will be applied to determine differences between relevant groups. The study is expected to reveal differences in students’ understanding of selected anatomical concepts following exposure to radiological image-based learning. Students exposed to radiological images may demonstrate improved recognition of internal structures, understanding of anatomical relationships, interpretation of structural orientation, and ability to relate anatomical knowledge to structures observed in living individuals. Variations may also be observed in students’ perceptions of the usefulness and clinical relevance of radiological images as complementary resources for anatomy learning. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, radiologists, medical educators, and curriculum developers involved in health sciences education. The study may provide useful information on the educational application of radiological images and support the integration of clinically relevant imaging materials into anatomy teaching. The findings may also assist educators in developing structured image-based learning activities that strengthen students’ ability to connect conventional anatomical knowledge with radiological appearances. The study will conclude by documenting the contribution of radiological image-based learning to students’ understanding of human anatomy and identifying areas where imaging resources may strengthen anatomy education. It is recommended that appropriately selected and clearly labelled radiological images be integrated with conventional anatomy teaching and practical activities, with adequate guidance provided during image interpretation. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations and different radiological imaging modalities are also recommended.
