Effect of Ultrasound Image Demonstration on Students’ Understanding of Regional Anatomy
Abstract
The study examines the effect of ultrasound image demonstration on students’ understanding of regional anatomy, with emphasis on the use of ultrasound images as an instructional resource for visualizing anatomical structures within specific regions of the human body. Ultrasound provides real-time images of internal structures and may allow students to relate anatomical concepts learned from specimens, models, and illustrations to the appearance of structures in living individuals. Its use may therefore support the development of clinically relevant regional anatomical knowledge. The study will assess the effect of ultrasound image demonstration on students’ understanding of regional anatomy and determine its influence on their ability to identify anatomical structures, recognize regional relationships, understand anatomical orientation, and interpret the position of structures within selected body regions. The study will also examine students’ perceptions of ultrasound image demonstrations in relation to their usefulness, clarity, accessibility, and contribution to regional anatomy learning. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students studying human anatomy or anatomy-related courses will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to relevant instructional groups where applicable. Data will be collected using a structured regional anatomy knowledge assessment and a validated questionnaire designed to assess students’ understanding and perceptions of ultrasound image demonstrations. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests will be applied to determine differences between relevant groups. The study is expected to reveal differences in students’ understanding of selected regional anatomical concepts following exposure to ultrasound image demonstrations. Students exposed to ultrasound images may demonstrate improved recognition of internal structures, understanding of spatial relationships, anatomical orientation, and appreciation of the arrangement of structures within selected body regions. Variations may also be observed in students’ perceptions of the clarity and usefulness of ultrasound images, particularly when interpreting structures that may be difficult to visualize through conventional two-dimensional illustrations. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, radiologists, medical educators, and curriculum developers involved in health sciences education. The study may provide useful information on the application of ultrasound imaging in regional anatomy teaching and support the integration of clinically relevant imaging resources into undergraduate anatomy education. The findings may also assist educators in developing structured image demonstration activities that enable students to connect regional anatomical knowledge with the appearance of structures in living individuals. The study will conclude by documenting the contribution of ultrasound image demonstrations to students’ understanding of regional anatomy and identifying areas where ultrasound-based learning may strengthen anatomy education. It is recommended that appropriately selected and clearly labelled ultrasound images be integrated with conventional practical and theoretical anatomy teaching, with adequate guidance provided during image interpretation. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations and different anatomical regions are also recommended.
