Morphological Variation of the Carotid Canal Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the carotid canal among young adults. The carotid canal is an important anatomical passage located within the petrous part of the temporal bone through which the internal carotid artery and accompanying structures pass toward the cranial cavity. Variations in its morphology are of anatomical and clinical importance because of its close relationship with major vascular and neural structures at the skull base. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the carotid canal among young adults using appropriate standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures. Relevant features such as canal length, diameter, shape, orientation, and other observable morphological characteristics will be documented where applicable. The study will also assess possible differences between the right and left carotid canals to identify patterns of bilateral variation. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Young adults who meet the eligibility criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Morphological assessment and measurements will be conducted using suitable imaging-based or osteological techniques, depending on the study setting, with standardized anatomical procedures used to ensure consistency. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative tests will be applied to assess bilateral differences and other morphological variations. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in the morphology and dimensions of the carotid canal among the young adults. Differences may be observed in canal diameter, shape, orientation, and other identifiable characteristics, including possible right-to-left variation. The findings are expected to provide useful reference information on normal carotid canal morphology within the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, neurosurgeons, otolaryngologists, vascular surgeons, forensic practitioners, and researchers concerned with skull-base anatomy. The study may contribute to improved understanding of carotid canal anatomy and provide baseline information that can support interpretation of cranial imaging and planning of clinical procedures involving the internal carotid artery and surrounding structures. The study will conclude by documenting the major patterns of morphological variation observed in the carotid canal among young adults. It will recommend the use of standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures in studies involving carotid canal morphology. Further research involving larger and more diverse populations and detailed imaging-based investigations will also be recommended to establish broader anatomical reference data.
