Morphological Variation of the Cricoid Cartilage Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines morphological variation of the cricoid cartilage among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its shape, configuration, and measurable anatomical dimensions. The cricoid cartilage is a complete ring-shaped cartilage located inferior to the thyroid cartilage and forms an important component of the laryngeal framework. It contributes to maintaining airway patency, provides attachment for muscles and ligaments, and serves as an important anatomical landmark in the upper airway. Understanding its morphological characteristics is therefore relevant to anatomical, radiological, surgical, and airway-related assessments. The study will assess the morphological characteristics and dimensions of the cricoid cartilage among undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include identifying different morphological patterns of the cricoid cartilage, determining its selected dimensions, assessing variations in the shape and configuration of its anterior arch and posterior lamina, and documenting the occurrence of observable anatomical differences among the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable imaging or anatomical specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Data on cricoid cartilage morphology and dimensions will be obtained using standardized anatomical or imaging-based procedures and appropriate anatomical landmarks. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to assess observed morphological differences. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns and measurable variations in the cricoid cartilage among the undergraduate students studied. Variations may be observed in the overall shape and configuration of the cartilage, as well as in the dimensions of the anterior arch, posterior lamina, and other selected anatomical features. Some measurements may demonstrate notable differences among individuals, reflecting the normal anatomical variability of the cricoid cartilage. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, otolaryngologists, anaesthetists, surgeons, speech and language professionals, and other healthcare practitioners involved in the assessment of the larynx and upper airway. The study may provide useful reference information for understanding normal cricoid cartilage morphology and may support the interpretation of imaging findings and anatomical variations relevant to airway management and surgical procedures involving the laryngeal region. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the cricoid cartilage among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating the cricoid cartilage, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on its morphology and dimensions.
