Morphological Variation of the Diaphragm Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the diaphragm among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its shape, configuration, muscular arrangement, and anatomical features. The diaphragm is a dome-shaped musculotendinous structure that separates the thoracic and abdominal cavities and plays a major role in respiration. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics is important for understanding individual anatomical variation and for supporting the interpretation of imaging findings and clinical procedures involving the thoracic and abdominal regions. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the diaphragm among undergraduate students using appropriate standardized anatomical and imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying variations in the shape and configuration of the diaphragm, documenting differences in its muscular and tendinous components, assessing the occurrence of notable anatomical variations, and comparing selected morphological characteristics between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, while standardized imaging-based assessment procedures and relevant anatomical landmarks will be used to evaluate the morphology of the diaphragm. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to determine significant differences in selected morphological characteristics. The study is expected to reveal variations in the morphology and configuration of the diaphragm among the participants. Differences may be observed in the contour, muscular arrangement, tendinous configuration, and other measurable anatomical features of the diaphragm. Some morphological characteristics may also demonstrate side-related variation, indicating that individual differences may occur in the structural appearance of the diaphragm among young adults. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, thoracic surgeons, respiratory physicians, anaesthetists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the thoracic and abdominal cavities. The study may provide useful reference information for recognizing normal anatomical variation, interpreting radiological findings, and understanding structural differences that may be relevant during diagnostic or surgical procedures involving the diaphragm. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the diaphragm among undergraduate students. It is recommended that anatomical variation be considered during anatomical and imaging assessments of the diaphragm, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to provide broader reference data on diaphragmatic morphology.
