Morphological Variation of the Epiglottic Cartilage Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines morphological variation of the epiglottic cartilage among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its shape, configuration, and measurable anatomical dimensions. The epiglottis is a leaf-shaped elastic cartilage located at the entrance of the larynx and plays an important role in protecting the lower respiratory tract during swallowing by helping to direct food and fluids away from the airway. Its morphology may vary among individuals, and understanding these variations is relevant to anatomical, radiological, airway management, and clinical assessments of the laryngeal region. The study will assess the morphological characteristics and dimensions of the epiglottic cartilage among undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include identifying different morphological patterns of the epiglottis, determining its selected dimensions, assessing variations in its shape and configuration, and documenting differences in features such as the length, breadth, and relative proportions of the cartilage among the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable imaging or anatomical specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Data on epiglottic morphology and dimensions will be obtained using standardized imaging-based or anatomical procedures and appropriate anatomical landmarks. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to assess observed morphological differences. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns and measurable variations in the epiglottic cartilage among the undergraduate students studied. Variations may be observed in the overall shape, contour, length, breadth, and configuration of the epiglottis. Some morphological features may occur more frequently than others, while selected dimensions may demonstrate notable differences among individuals, reflecting normal anatomical variability of the epiglottic cartilage. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, otolaryngologists, anaesthetists, speech and language professionals, surgeons, and other healthcare practitioners involved in the assessment of the larynx and upper airway. The study may provide useful reference information for understanding normal epiglottic morphology and may support the interpretation of radiological findings and anatomical variations relevant to swallowing, airway assessment, and clinical procedures involving the laryngeal region. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the epiglottic cartilage among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating the epiglottis, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on epiglottic morphology and dimensions.
