Morphological Variation of the Multifidus Muscle Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the multifidus muscle among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its anatomical configuration, dimensions, and structural characteristics. The multifidus is a deep intrinsic muscle of the back that extends along the vertebral column and contributes to spinal extension, rotation, and segmental stabilization. Understanding its morphological characteristics is important for appreciating individual variation in the musculature of the vertebral column and for supporting anatomical and clinical assessment of the spine. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the multifidus muscle among undergraduate students using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying different morphological patterns of the muscle, determining selected dimensions, documenting variations in its shape and configuration, and assessing observable differences in its anatomical characteristics among the study participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the multifidus muscle will be obtained through standardized anatomical or imaging-based assessment procedures, depending on the method employed. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to examine observed variations. The study is expected to reveal variations in the morphology and dimensions of the multifidus muscle among the undergraduate students studied. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating the muscle and that further studies involving larger and more diverse populations be conducted to establish broader reference data on multifidus muscle morphology and anatomical variation.
