Morphological Variation of the Posterior Nasal Spine Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the posterior nasal spine among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its shape, size, orientation, and overall anatomical configuration. The posterior nasal spine is a bony projection formed by the posterior ends of the palatine bones and contributes to the attachment of structures associated with the soft palate. Its morphology is relevant to the understanding of craniofacial skeletal variation and may have clinical importance in orthodontic assessment, oral and maxillofacial procedures, palatal surgery, and the interpretation of craniofacial imaging. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the posterior nasal spine among undergraduate students using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based or osteological assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the different morphological patterns of the posterior nasal spine, determining its measurable dimensions, assessing variations in its orientation and configuration, and documenting observable differences in its anatomical characteristics within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Data on the shape, dimensions, orientation, and configuration of the posterior nasal spine will be obtained using standardized anatomical and imaging procedures. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to assess variations in the observed characteristics. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the posterior nasal spine among the undergraduate students studied. The study may provide useful reference information for anatomical education, interpretation of craniofacial imaging, orthodontic assessment, palatal procedures, and surgical planning involving the posterior region of the hard palate. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the posterior nasal spine among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized anatomical landmarks and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating the posterior nasal spine, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader craniofacial reference data and improve understanding of its anatomical variability.
