Relationship Between Cervical Spine Mobility and Shoulder Function Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between cervical spine mobility and shoulder function among undergraduate students, with emphasis on the functional interaction between cervical movement and shoulder performance. The cervical spine provides mobility and support for the head and serves as an important component of the musculoskeletal system, while the shoulder complex allows a wide range of upper limb movements. The close anatomical and functional relationship between these regions makes the assessment of cervical mobility and shoulder function relevant to understanding normal upper limb movement and postural performance. The study will assess cervical spine mobility and shoulder function among undergraduate students and determine the relationship between both parameters. The specific objectives will include measuring cervical spine mobility, assessing shoulder function, comparing the observed functional measurements where applicable, and determining the strength and direction of the relationship between cervical spine mobility and shoulder function. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Cervical spine mobility will be assessed using standardized range-of-motion procedures, while shoulder function will be evaluated using appropriate clinical or functional assessment methods under controlled conditions. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine the relationship between the assessed variables. The study is expected to reveal measurable variations in cervical spine mobility and shoulder function among the participants. A relationship may be observed between cervical mobility and shoulder functional performance, with the strength and direction of the association varying among individuals. Differences may also be observed in specific movement patterns or functional measurements, although the findings will describe association rather than establish a causal relationship. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, orthopaedic practitioners, sports scientists, and other professionals involved in musculoskeletal and functional assessment. The study may provide useful reference information for understanding the functional interaction between the cervical spine and shoulder complex and may support the assessment of movement limitations, postural function, rehabilitation needs, and upper limb performance among young adults. The study will conclude by documenting the pattern of cervical spine mobility and shoulder function and determining their observed relationship among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized procedures be used when assessing cervical and shoulder mobility, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to provide broader reference data on the functional relationship between these anatomical regions.
