Relationship Between Facial Symmetry and Facial Breadth Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study will examine the relationship between facial symmetry and facial breadth among undergraduate students, with emphasis on determining whether variation in facial breadth is associated with differences in the degree of facial symmetry. Facial symmetry is an important aspect of human facial morphology and refers to the similarity of corresponding features on the right and left sides of the face. Assessing facial symmetry alongside facial breadth may provide useful information for understanding individual variation in facial structure. The study will specifically assess selected bilateral facial dimensions and determine the degree of facial symmetry among the participants. Facial breadth will be measured across the maximum transverse width of the face using standardized anatomical landmarks and procedures. Corresponding right and left facial measurements will be compared to determine the extent of bilateral symmetry or asymmetry, while the relationship between facial symmetry and facial breadth will subsequently be examined. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and relevant demographic information will be obtained from the participants. Standardized direct anthropometric measurements will be obtained under consistent participant positioning and measurement conditions. The data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and comparison techniques will be used to examine the relationship between facial symmetry and facial breadth. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in facial symmetry and facial breadth among the undergraduate students. Differences between corresponding right and left facial measurements may be observed, reflecting varying degrees of bilateral facial asymmetry. The study is also expected to identify the direction and strength of any association between facial breadth and the degree of facial symmetry within the study population. The findings of the study will be useful to anatomists and anthropologists in understanding patterns of facial morphology and bilateral variation. They may also provide relevant information for forensic practitioners involved in facial identification and biological profiling, as well as clinicians, orthodontic professionals, facial researchers, and other specialists concerned with craniofacial assessment. The findings may contribute to the development of population-specific reference information on facial symmetry and breadth. The study will conclude by providing information on the relationship between facial symmetry and facial breadth among undergraduate students. The use of standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures is recommended to improve the accuracy and reproducibility of facial anthropometric assessments. Further research involving larger and more diverse populations is recommended to provide broader reference data and examine additional factors associated with facial symmetry and facial dimensions.
