Relationship Between Finger Flexion Strength and Hand Functional Performance

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between finger flexion strength and hand functional performance among young adults, with emphasis on how the force generated by the finger flexor muscles may influence the ability of the hand to perform functional activities. Finger flexion is essential for gripping, holding, manipulating, and controlling objects during routine activities. Adequate strength of the finger flexor muscles is therefore important for maintaining effective hand function and supporting coordinated upper-limb performance. The study will assess finger flexion strength and hand functional performance among the participants using standardized assessment procedures. Finger flexion strength will be measured using an appropriate hand or finger dynamometry device, while hand functional performance will be evaluated through standardized tasks involving gripping, object manipulation, precision movements, or repeated hand activities. The assessments will provide quantitative information on finger muscle force and the functional ability of the hand. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Young adult participants will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and finger flexion strength and hand functional performance will be assessed under standardized conditions. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate correlation or inferential statistical test will be applied to determine the relationship between finger flexion strength and hand functional performance. The study is expected to reveal a measurable relationship between finger flexion strength and hand functional performance among the participants. Individuals with greater finger flexion strength may demonstrate better performance during functional hand tasks, particularly activities requiring sustained gripping, object manipulation, and controlled finger movements. However, variations may be observed because functional hand performance also depends on coordination, dexterity, range of motion, and the ability to control individual finger movements. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation professionals, ergonomists, sports professionals, and other healthcare practitioners concerned with hand and upper-limb function. The study may provide useful information on the contribution of finger flexor strength to functional hand performance and may support the assessment of individuals involved in activities requiring repeated or sustained finger use. The findings may also assist in developing appropriate strengthening and rehabilitation programmes for improving hand function. The study will conclude by determining the relationship between finger flexion strength and hand functional performance among the study population. It is recommended that finger flexion strength and functional hand performance be considered together when evaluating hand function, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to provide broader information on the relationship between finger muscle strength and functional hand ability.
