Relationship Between Laryngeal Dimensions and Neck Length Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between laryngeal dimensions and neck length among undergraduate students, with emphasis on determining whether variations in neck length are associated with differences in selected dimensions of the larynx. The larynx is an important structure of the upper respiratory tract that contributes to airway protection, phonation, and passage of air into the trachea. Knowledge of its dimensions and anatomical relationships is important for understanding individual variation and may support clinical assessment, imaging interpretation, airway management, and procedures involving the neck and upper respiratory tract. The study will assess selected laryngeal dimensions and neck length among undergraduate students using appropriate standardized anatomical and imaging-based measurement procedures. The specific objectives will include determining selected dimensions of the larynx, measuring the neck length of the participants, assessing the relationship between laryngeal dimensions and neck length, and identifying variations in the measured parameters among the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Selected laryngeal dimensions will be obtained using appropriate imaging-based procedures and standardized anatomical landmarks, while neck length will be measured using standardized anthropometric techniques. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and appropriate inferential statistical tests will be used to determine the relationship between laryngeal dimensions and neck length.The study is expected to reveal variations in the selected laryngeal dimensions and neck length among the participants. A measurable relationship may be observed between neck length and some laryngeal dimensions, with differences in the strength and direction of association across the parameters assessed. The findings are expected to provide information on the extent to which external neck measurements correspond with selected internal laryngeal dimensions among young adults.The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, otolaryngologists, anaesthetists, speech and language professionals, and other healthcare practitioners involved in the assessment of the larynx and neck region. The study may provide useful reference information for interpreting laryngeal measurements, understanding individual anatomical variation, and supporting clinical procedures involving airway management, endotracheal intubation, and laryngeal assessment. The study will conclude by documenting the selected laryngeal dimensions and their relationship with neck length among undergraduate students. It is recommended that individual anatomical variation be considered when assessing laryngeal dimensions and planning procedures involving the upper airway, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data.
