Sexual Dimorphism in External Auditory Canal Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines sexual dimorphism in external auditory canal dimensions among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in the measurable characteristics of the external auditory canal between male and female individuals. The external auditory canal is a narrow passage extending from the auricle to the tympanic membrane and serves important roles in the transmission of sound and protection of the deeper structures of the ear. Knowledge of its dimensional characteristics is relevant to the understanding of anatomical variation and may provide useful information for otological assessment, audiological procedures, forensic anthropology, and clinical examination. The study will assess selected dimensions of the external auditory canal among undergraduate students and determine whether measurable differences exist between male and female participants. The specific objectives will include measuring selected parameters such as canal length, diameter, width, and other appropriate dimensions, comparing the measurements between male and female participants, and documenting the pattern of variation observed within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Measurements of the external auditory canal will be obtained using appropriate clinical, imaging-based, or anatomical assessment procedures and standardized anatomical landmarks. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate independent-group inferential tests will be applied to determine significant differences between male and female participants. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in external auditory canal dimensions among the undergraduate students studied. Some of the selected dimensions may show statistically significant differences between male and female participants, while other measurements may demonstrate considerable overlap between the groups. The findings are expected to provide information on the pattern of sexual variation in external auditory canal dimensions within the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, otologists, audiologists, radiologists, forensic anthropologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the ear and external auditory canal. The study may provide reference data for understanding normal dimensional variation and may support clinical evaluation, interpretation of imaging findings, forensic anthropological assessment, and procedures involving the external auditory canal. The study will conclude by documenting the dimensional characteristics and pattern of sexual variation in the external auditory canal among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized measurement procedures be used when assessing external auditory canal dimensions and that further studies involving larger and more diverse populations be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data and improve understanding of variation in the external ear.
