Sexual Dimorphism in Metatarsal Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines sexual dimorphism in metatarsal dimensions among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in the size and morphology of the metatarsal bones between males and females. The metatarsals are important long bones of the forefoot that contribute to the structure, stability, weight-bearing function, and overall biomechanics of the foot. Knowledge of variations in metatarsal dimensions is important for understanding skeletal differences and may provide useful anatomical reference information for clinical, anthropological, and forensic applications. The study will assess the dimensions of the metatarsal bones and determine whether measurable differences exist between male and female participants or suitable osteological specimens. The specific objectives will include determining the length, breadth, and other appropriate dimensions of selected metatarsals, comparing the measured dimensions between males and females, documenting the pattern of variation among the metatarsals, and identifying the dimensions that may show noticeable sex-related differences within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable metatarsal osteological specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the method of assessment employed. Metatarsal dimensions will be obtained using standardized anthropometric or osteological measurement procedures and appropriate measuring instruments. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine whether observed differences between male and female groups are statistically significant. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in metatarsal dimensions among the study population, with some dimensions potentially showing statistically significant differences between males and females. It is recommended that standardized measurement procedures be used in the assessment of metatarsal dimensions and that further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data.
