Sexual Dimorphism in Palatine Tonsil Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines sexual dimorphism in the dimensions of the palatine tonsils among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in selected tonsillar measurements between male and female participants. The palatine tonsils are paired lymphoid structures located within the tonsillar fossae of the oropharynx and contribute to immune surveillance of materials entering the respiratory and digestive tracts. Knowledge of variations in their dimensions is important for understanding normal anatomical differences and for supporting clinical assessment of the oropharyngeal region. The study will determine and compare selected dimensions of the palatine tonsils among male and female undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include determining the length, breadth, and thickness of the palatine tonsils where applicable, assessing the mean dimensions for each sex, comparing the observed measurements between male and female participants, and determining the extent of variation in tonsillar dimensions within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data on the dimensions of the palatine tonsils will be obtained using standardized clinical, imaging-based, or anatomical assessment procedures, depending on the method employed. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate independent-group comparative tests will be applied to assess differences between male and female participants. The study is expected to reveal variations in the dimensions of the palatine tonsils among the study population. Some of the measured dimensions may show differences between male and female participants, while other measurements may demonstrate substantial overlap between the two groups. These findings are expected to provide information on the extent of sex-related variation in palatine tonsil dimensions without implying that sex alone determines individual tonsillar size. The findings will be useful to anatomists, otorhinolaryngologists, radiologists, oral and maxillofacial specialists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the oropharyngeal region. The study may provide useful anatomical reference data for interpreting tonsillar measurements during clinical and imaging examinations and may contribute to improved understanding of normal differences in palatine tonsil morphology between male and female individuals. The study will conclude by documenting the dimensions and observed sex-related variations of the palatine tonsils among the study population. It is recommended that sex-related differences and individual anatomical variation be considered when evaluating palatine tonsil dimensions, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference values.
