Sexual Dimorphism in Patellar Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines sexual dimorphism in patellar dimensions among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in the measurable characteristics of the patella between male and female individuals. The patella is the largest sesamoid bone in the human body and forms an important component of the knee joint, where it contributes to protection of the joint and improves the mechanical efficiency of the quadriceps mechanism. Knowledge of its dimensional characteristics is important for understanding anatomical variation and may be relevant to orthopedic procedures, radiological assessment, prosthetic design, and forensic anthropology. The study will assess selected dimensions of the patella among undergraduate students and determine whether measurable differences exist between male and female participants. The specific objectives will include measuring the length, breadth, thickness, and other selected dimensions of the patella, comparing the measurements between male and female specimens, and documenting the pattern of dimensional variation observed within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of patellae or suitable osteological specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. The dimensions of the patella will be obtained through direct osteological examination using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate measuring instruments. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate independent-group inferential tests will be applied to determine significant differences between male and female specimens. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in patellar dimensions among the specimens studied. Some of the selected dimensions may show statistically significant differences between male and female specimens, while other measurements may demonstrate considerable overlap between the groups. The findings are expected to provide information on the pattern of sexual variation in patellar dimensions within the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, physiotherapists, forensic anthropologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the knee joint. The study may provide reference data for understanding normal variation in patellar dimensions and may contribute to orthopedic assessment, prosthetic and implant considerations, and forensic identification. The findings may also support anatomical and osteological studies involving the patella. The study will conclude by documenting the dimensional characteristics and pattern of sexual variation in the patella among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized osteological measurement procedures be used when assessing patellar dimensions and that further studies involving larger and more diverse skeletal samples be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data.
