Sexual Dimorphism in Patellar Facet Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines sexual dimorphism in patellar facet dimensions among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in the measurable characteristics of the articular facets on the posterior surface of the patella between male and female specimens. The patellar facets form the articular surface of the patellofemoral joint and contribute to the smooth movement and stability of the knee during flexion and extension. Knowledge of their dimensional characteristics is important for understanding anatomical variation and may be relevant to orthopedic assessment, radiological interpretation, knee joint procedures, prosthetic design, and forensic osteological studies. The study will assess selected dimensions of the patellar facets among undergraduate students and determine whether measurable differences exist between male and female specimens. The specific objectives will include measuring the length, breadth, and other appropriate dimensions of the patellar facets, documenting their morphological characteristics, comparing the measurements between male and female specimens, and determining the pattern of dimensional variation observed within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of patellae or suitable osteological specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Measurements of the patellar facets will be obtained through direct osteological examination using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate measuring instruments. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate independent-group inferential tests will be applied to determine significant differences between male and female specimens. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in patellar facet dimensions among the specimens studied. Some of the selected facet measurements may show statistically significant differences between male and female specimens, while other dimensions may demonstrate considerable overlap between the groups. Variations may also be observed in the relative dimensions and configuration of the articular facets, providing further information on anatomical differences in the patellofemoral joint. The findings will be useful to anatomists, orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, physiotherapists, forensic anthropologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the knee joint. The study may provide reference data for understanding normal variation in patellar facet dimensions and may contribute to orthopedic evaluation, interpretation of imaging findings, and planning of procedures involving the patellofemoral joint. The findings may also support forensic and osteological studies involving sex-related variation in the patella. The study will conclude by documenting the dimensional characteristics and pattern of sexual variation in the patellar facets among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized osteological measurement procedures be used when assessing patellar facet dimensions and that further studies involving larger and more diverse skeletal samples be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data.
