CORPORATE SURVIVAL AND GROWTH STRATEGIES IN A COMPETITIVE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT

ABSTRACT

This study examined corporate survival and growth strategies in a competitive business environment. The research was motivated by the increasing intensity of competition, rapid technological changes, and shifting consumer preferences that challenge the sustainability of organizations. The study aimed to identify key strategies that organizations adopt to survive and achieve long-term growth, evaluate their effectiveness, and highlight challenges associated with their implementation. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised managers, business owners, and employees from selected organizations operating in competitive industries. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and interviews, and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages, alongside inferential analysis to assess the relationship between strategic practices and organizational performance. Findings revealed that organizations adopt various survival and growth strategies, including innovation, diversification, cost leadership, market expansion, strategic alliances, and effective customer relationship management. The study found that firms that continuously innovate, adapt to market trends, and invest in human capital are more likely to achieve sustained growth and competitive advantage. Additionally, strong leadership, effective planning, and efficient resource management were identified as critical factors influencing corporate success. However, challenges such as limited financial resources, market volatility, technological disruptions, and regulatory constraints were identified as barriers to effective strategy implementation. The study concluded that corporate survival and growth in a competitive business environment depend largely on the ability of organizations to adopt flexible, innovative, and customer-focused strategies. It recommended that organizations should invest in research and development, embrace digital transformation, strengthen strategic planning processes, and build resilient structures to navigate competitive pressures and achieve long-term success.

1.1       Background of the Study

Corporate survival and growth have become central concerns for businesses operating in today’s highly competitive and unpredictable environment, where firms must constantly adapt to remain relevant (David & David, 2021). The increasing pace of globalization, technological advancement, and market liberalization has intensified competition across industries, making it more difficult for organizations to sustain long term performance (Hill, Schilling, & Jones, 2022). Many companies now face pressure to innovate, reduce costs, and respond quickly to changing customer needs in order to maintain their market position (Kotler & Keller, 2022).

In recent years, businesses have recognized that survival is no longer guaranteed by size or past success, but rather by the ability to develop effective strategies that align with environmental changes (Wheelen, Hunger, Hoffman, & Bamford, 2023).
