Analysis of Coverage Limits Across General Insurance Policies

Abstract

The study examines the analysis of coverage limits across general insurance policies, focusing on how the maximum amount an insurer is obligated to pay under a policy influences insurance risk exposure, claim payments, and overall portfolio performance. Coverage limits are an important component of general insurance contracts because they define the extent of financial protection available to policyholders and the maximum liability assumed by insurers. Proper analysis of coverage limits is therefore essential for effective risk assessment, premium determination, and claims management. The study will investigate variations in coverage limits across selected general insurance policies and examine their relationship with insurance claim experience. It will consider how differences in maximum policy benefits affect the potential financial obligations of insurers and the level of protection provided to policyholders. The study will also assess patterns in coverage limits across different classes of general insurance business. The analysis will focus on policy coverage limits, insured values, claim amounts, claim frequency, claim severity, loss experience, and insurer liability. Actuarial techniques will be applied to evaluate the expected losses associated with different coverage levels and to determine how coverage limits influence the distribution of claims. The study will further examine whether variations in coverage limits correspond with differences in the financial exposure of insurance companies. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant secondary insurance data containing information on policy limits, insured amounts, claims, and loss experience will be analysed. Descriptive statistics, frequency analysis, loss distribution techniques, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and appropriate actuarial models will be employed to examine the patterns and relationships within the data. The study is expected to reveal significant variations in coverage limits across different general insurance policies and corresponding differences in expected insurer exposure. Higher coverage limits may be associated with greater potential claim liabilities, particularly where insured losses are substantial. The findings may also show that the effect of coverage limits on expected losses depends on the frequency and severity characteristics of the underlying insurance risks. The findings are expected to provide useful information for insurers, actuaries, underwriters, and insurance regulators in evaluating coverage structures within general insurance portfolios. Improved analysis of coverage limits may support more accurate assessment of potential liabilities, appropriate premium determination, effective underwriting, and better management of insurance risks. The study may also assist insurers in reviewing policy limits in relation to historical claims experience. The study concludes that coverage limits are an important factor in determining the financial exposure associated with general insurance policies. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly analyse coverage limits alongside claims experience, loss distributions, and insured values to support sound actuarial assessment, appropriate pricing, and effective management of policy liabilities.
