Effect of Insurance Risk Evaluation on Policy Pricing
Insurance risk evaluation is an important process in insurance operations because it enables insurers to assess the likelihood and potential severity of losses associated with prospective and existing policyholders. Policy pricing refers to the determination of the premium charged for insurance coverage based on the level of risk and other relevant considerations. Accurate risk evaluation is therefore essential for establishing premiums that appropriately reflect the risks being insured. However, weaknesses in risk assessment may result in inappropriate pricing, inadequate premium collection, or reduced competitiveness. This study therefore examines the effect of insurance risk evaluation on policy pricing. Insurance risk evaluation involves the systematic examination of factors that may influence the probability and financial consequences of an insured loss. It may include the assessment of the characteristics of the insured, the nature and level of exposure, historical loss experience, claims information, policy conditions, and other relevant risk indicators. Effective evaluation enables insurers to classify risks appropriately and determine the extent to which particular risks should influence premium decisions. The quality of information obtained and the methods used in evaluating risk can consequently affect the accuracy and consistency of policy pricing. Policy pricing involves determining the premium that policyholders are required to pay in exchange for insurance protection. Appropriate pricing seeks to ensure that premiums are sufficient to cover expected claims and other associated insurance costs while remaining reasonable and competitive within the market. Risk evaluation contributes to policy pricing by providing information about the probability and potential magnitude of losses associated with different risks. More accurate risk evaluation can therefore support better differentiation of risks and promote pricing decisions that correspond more closely with the characteristics of the insured exposure. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise relevant insurance professionals and practitioners, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on insurance risk evaluation practices and policy pricing. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of insurance risk evaluation on policy pricing. The study is expected to establish that effective insurance risk evaluation has a significant positive effect on policy pricing. It is expected that systematic assessment of risk characteristics, exposure levels, historical loss information, and other relevant risk factors will contribute to more appropriate premium determination. The findings may further indicate that improved risk evaluation can reduce inconsistencies in pricing, support better risk classification, and strengthen insurers’ ability to establish premiums that adequately reflect the risks covered. The study will conclude that insurance risk evaluation is an important determinant of effective policy pricing and should be given adequate attention by insurance organisations. It will recommend that insurers strengthen risk assessment procedures, improve the quality and availability of relevant risk information, and adopt appropriate analytical approaches in evaluating policyholder risks. These measures can promote more accurate premium determination, improve underwriting decisions, support financial stability, and enhance the overall efficiency of insurance operations.
