Analysis of Reinsurance Dependence Among Nigerian Insurers
Abstract
The study examines reinsurance dependence among Nigerian insurers, with emphasis on the extent to which insurance companies rely on reinsurance arrangements to manage underwriting risks and claims liabilities. Reinsurance provides insurers with a mechanism for transferring part of their risks to reinsurers and can support underwriting capacity, claims management, and financial stability. However, excessive dependence on reinsurance may increase reinsurance costs and create financial and operational exposure associated with reliance on external risk transfer. The study will analyse the level of reinsurance dependence among Nigerian insurance companies and examine its implications for their underwriting and financial activities. Particular attention will be given to the proportion of risks and premiums ceded to reinsurers, reinsurance recoveries, retained risks, claims experience, and the size of insurance portfolios. The study will assess the extent to which insurers depend on reinsurance protection in managing their overall risk exposure. The study will further examine variations in reinsurance dependence across insurers and insurance business portfolios. Factors such as claims frequency, claims severity, underwriting volume, risk concentration, retention levels, reinsurance capacity, and the nature of risks underwritten will be considered. The analysis will also assess whether higher levels of reinsurance dependence are associated with differences in claims management, underwriting performance, and financial stability among Nigerian insurers. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant secondary data from Nigerian insurance companies will be analysed using descriptive statistics, trend analysis, comparative analysis, and appropriate actuarial and statistical techniques. Measures such as reinsurance ratios, cession ratios, retention ratios, claims ratios, and reinsurance recovery ratios may be used to assess the level of dependence on reinsurance. Where appropriate, correlation and regression analysis may also be applied to examine relationships between reinsurance dependence and selected insurance performance indicators. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of reinsurance dependence among Nigerian insurers. It is expected that insurers with higher exposure to large, complex, or volatile risks may demonstrate greater reliance on reinsurance protection. The findings may also indicate that substantial reinsurance dependence can help reduce retained claims exposure and support underwriting capacity, while excessive reliance may increase reinsurance expenses and reduce the proportion of business retained by insurers. The study is further expected to establish that reinsurance dependence is influenced by the nature of insurance risks, claims experience, financial capacity, retention policies, and availability of suitable reinsurance arrangements. Appropriate use of reinsurance may strengthen risk management and provide protection against significant losses, whereas excessive dependence may create challenges where reinsurance costs increase or recoveries become uncertain. The findings may therefore highlight the importance of maintaining a suitable balance between risk retention and risk transfer. The study concludes that analysing reinsurance dependence is important for understanding the risk management and financial practices of Nigerian insurers. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies regularly evaluate their levels of reinsurance dependence, strengthen their risk retention strategies, maintain reliable reinsurance relationships, assess the financial strength of reinsurers, and use actuarial analysis to determine appropriate levels of risk transfer that support sustainable underwriting and financial performance.
