Analysis of Treasury Investment Returns for Insurance Companies

Abstract

The study examines treasury investment returns for insurance companies, focusing on the performance of funds invested in treasury instruments and their contribution to the overall financial performance of insurers. Treasury investments, particularly government-backed securities, are important components of insurance investment portfolios because they provide relatively stable income, liquidity, and opportunities for preserving invested capital. The level of returns generated from these investments can therefore influence the financial strength and investment performance of insurance companies. The study will analyse the returns generated by insurance companies from treasury investments and examine variations in investment performance over time. Attention will be given to treasury bills, government bonds, and other short- and medium-term government securities commonly held by insurance companies. The study will assess the income generated from these instruments in relation to the amount invested, maturity periods, prevailing interest rates, and changes in market conditions. The study will further examine factors that may influence treasury investment returns, including interest rate movements, investment duration, reinvestment decisions, maturity structures, inflation, and changes in government security yields. Measures such as average investment return, yield, return on investment, interest income, and portfolio performance will be considered in assessing the effectiveness of treasury investments. Comparative analysis will also be used to determine differences in returns across selected treasury instruments and insurance companies. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be obtained from insurance companies’ annual reports, financial statements, investment records, regulatory publications, and other relevant secondary sources. Descriptive statistics, trend analysis, ratio analysis, and comparative analysis will be employed to evaluate treasury investment returns and identify changes in investment performance over the study period. The study is expected to reveal variations in treasury investment returns among insurance companies and across different treasury instruments. The findings may indicate that changes in interest rates, investment duration, maturity periods, and prevailing economic conditions significantly influence the returns generated from treasury investments. Longer-duration government securities may provide different return patterns from short-term treasury instruments, particularly during periods of changing interest rates. The findings are expected to provide useful information on the contribution of treasury investments to the investment income and financial performance of insurance companies. The study may assist insurers in evaluating the effectiveness of their treasury investment strategies and making appropriate decisions regarding portfolio allocation, maturity selection, and reinvestment. It may also provide useful information for actuarial professionals, investment managers, and regulators concerned with the financial stability of insurance companies. The study concludes that effective analysis and management of treasury investment returns are important for improving investment performance and supporting the financial stability of insurance companies. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly evaluate the returns and risks associated with treasury investments, monitor interest rate movements, and adopt appropriate investment strategies that balance safety, liquidity, and profitability. Periodic performance assessment should also be encouraged to ensure that treasury investments continue to contribute effectively to insurers’ financial objectives.
