Comparative Analysis of Premium Calculation Approaches in General Insurance
Abstract
The study examines the comparative analysis of premium calculation approaches in general insurance, focusing on the different actuarial and statistical methods used to determine appropriate insurance premiums. Premium calculation is a fundamental component of general insurance because premiums must adequately reflect expected claims, risk exposure, expenses, and other relevant pricing considerations. Understanding the differences among premium calculation approaches is therefore important for accurate insurance pricing and effective risk management. The study will compare selected premium calculation approaches and examine their application in estimating premiums for general insurance policies. It will assess how different methods respond to variations in claims frequency, claims severity, exposure levels, and loss experience. The study will also examine the differences in premium estimates generated by alternative approaches using comparable insurance data. The analysis will focus on methods such as pure premium calculation, loss ratio approaches, expected value methods, experience rating, and other appropriate actuarial pricing techniques. Factors including historical claims experience, exposure units, claim frequency, claim severity, loss variability, and expenses will be considered in evaluating the premium estimates produced by each approach. The study will assess the consistency and sensitivity of the methods under different claims and exposure conditions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical general insurance claims and exposure data will be obtained from appropriate secondary sources. Descriptive statistics, claims frequency and severity analysis, loss ratio analysis, pure premium estimation, and selected actuarial premium calculation techniques will be employed to calculate and compare premium estimates. Appropriate statistical measures will also be used to examine differences among the approaches. The study is expected to reveal variations in premium estimates across the different calculation approaches. The magnitude of these differences may depend on the characteristics of the claims data, exposure levels, loss variability, and assumptions underlying each method. The findings may also show that some approaches respond differently to changes in claims experience and risk exposure, highlighting the importance of selecting an appropriate method for particular general insurance portfolios. The findings are expected to provide useful information for insurers, actuaries, underwriters, and insurance pricing analysts. Comparative assessment of premium calculation approaches may support better understanding of the strengths and limitations of different pricing methods and improve the consistency of premium estimation. The study may also assist insurers in reviewing their existing pricing procedures and selecting calculation approaches that are appropriate for their available claims and exposure data. The study concludes that different premium calculation approaches provide varying perspectives on the estimation of general insurance premiums and their relationship with claims experience. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies evaluate alternative actuarial pricing approaches using reliable claims and exposure data and regularly review their premium calculation methods to support adequate, consistent, and risk-sensitive insurance pricing.
