Effect of Actuarial Gains and Losses on Defined Benefit Scheme Liabilities
Abstract
Defined benefit pension schemes create long-term obligations to provide predetermined retirement benefits to eligible employees. The valuation of these obligations depends on demographic, financial, and economic assumptions, which may differ from actual experience over time. Such differences can generate actuarial gains or losses and consequently affect the measured liabilities of defined benefit pension schemes. This study will examine the effect of actuarial gains and losses on defined benefit scheme liabilities. It will assess how changes arising from differences between actuarial assumptions and actual experience influence the value of pension obligations. The study will also examine the extent to which variations in demographic and financial assumptions contribute to changes in defined benefit scheme liabilities. The study will focus on actuarial gains and losses, defined benefit scheme liabilities, mortality assumptions, salary growth assumptions, discount rates, employee turnover, retirement age, pension obligations, and actual scheme experience. Actuarial valuation techniques will be applied to identify and estimate gains and losses arising from changes in assumptions and experience. Comparative and sensitivity analyses will be used to assess their effects on pension liabilities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant defined benefit scheme data, employee demographics, salary information, years of service, retirement assumptions, mortality experience, discount rates, and historical actuarial valuation results will be analysed using actuarial valuation techniques, variance analysis, sensitivity analysis, and scenario modelling. Changes in actuarial gains and losses will be compared with corresponding movements in defined benefit scheme liabilities. The study is expected to reveal that actuarial gains and losses may cause significant changes in defined benefit scheme liabilities. Favourable differences between expected and actual experience may reduce estimated liabilities, while adverse differences may increase them. The magnitude and direction of these changes may depend on salary growth, mortality experience, employee turnover, retirement patterns, discount rates, and other actuarial assumptions. The study will be useful to pension actuaries, employers, pension administrators, financial reporting professionals, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for understanding changes in defined benefit liabilities and improving pension valuation practices. The findings may also support financial reporting, pension funding decisions, liability management, and monitoring of the financial position of defined benefit schemes. The study concludes that actuarial gains and losses are important determinants of changes in defined benefit scheme liabilities. It is therefore recommended that pension administrators and sponsoring organizations regularly evaluate actual scheme experience against actuarial assumptions and apply appropriate actuarial valuation and sensitivity analysis techniques when assessing defined benefit liabilities.
