Effect of Actuarial Model Validation Techniques on Insurance Valuation Results
Abstract
Actuarial models are widely used by insurance companies to estimate premiums, liabilities, reserves, claims costs, and other financial obligations. The reliability of these valuation results depends partly on the accuracy and suitability of the models used. Actuarial model validation provides a systematic process for assessing model assumptions, inputs, calculations, outputs, and performance. Effective validation can therefore help identify modelling errors and improve the reliability of insurance valuation results. This study examines the effect of actuarial model validation techniques on insurance valuation results. The study will investigate how different validation procedures influence the accuracy, consistency, and reliability of results produced by actuarial models. Particular attention will be given to validation activities such as assumption testing, data verification, model output comparison, sensitivity analysis, back-testing, and scenario testing. The study will consider factors such as model assumptions, data quality, model specification, parameter estimates, output accuracy, sensitivity to assumptions, and historical model performance. Different actuarial valuation models will be assessed using selected validation techniques to determine how validation affects estimated insurance premiums, reserves, liabilities, and expected claims costs. Comparative analysis will also be used to identify differences between validated and unvalidated model results. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant insurance data and actuarial model outputs will be analysed using model validation procedures, descriptive statistics, error analysis, sensitivity testing, back-testing, and scenario analysis. Statistical measures will be applied to compare valuation results before and after validation and to assess the extent to which validation techniques improve the consistency and accuracy of actuarial estimates. The study is expected to reveal that the application of appropriate model validation techniques may improve the reliability of insurance valuation results by identifying model errors, inappropriate assumptions, data inconsistencies, and parameter estimation problems. Sensitivity and scenario testing may further demonstrate how changes in assumptions affect valuation outcomes. The study may also show that different validation techniques provide different levels of insight depending on the complexity and purpose of the actuarial model. The findings of the study may provide useful information to actuaries, insurance companies, risk managers, regulators, auditors, and actuarial analysts. Understanding the effect of model validation can support more reliable premium calculations, reserve estimates, liability valuations, and risk assessments. The findings may also assist insurers in strengthening model governance, improving documentation, identifying model weaknesses, and supporting more informed financial decisions. The study concludes that actuarial model validation techniques are important for improving the reliability of insurance valuation results because they help assess whether models, assumptions, inputs, and outputs are appropriate for their intended purposes. It is therefore recommended that insurers establish systematic validation procedures, regularly test actuarial models against historical and alternative scenarios, review key assumptions, and document validation results to strengthen the quality and credibility of insurance valuation outcomes.
