Effect of Birth Cohort Differences on Mortality Experience

Abstract

The study examines the effect of birth cohort differences on mortality experience, focusing on how individuals born during different periods may exhibit distinct patterns of mortality and survival. Birth cohort analysis is important in actuarial studies because mortality experience can vary across generations as a result of changes in healthcare, living conditions, socioeconomic circumstances, lifestyle patterns, and other population characteristics. Understanding these differences can improve the assessment of mortality risk and the accuracy of demographic and actuarial projections. The study will investigate variations in mortality experience among different birth cohorts and assess how cohort differences influence observed mortality rates and survival patterns. Attention will be given to age-specific mortality rates, survival probabilities, life expectancy, and differences in mortality experience between successive cohorts. The study will examine whether mortality patterns observed in one generation remain consistent across other cohorts or whether significant changes occur over time. The study will also consider factors that may contribute to differences in mortality experience between birth cohorts. It is therefore recommended that actuaries and demographic analysts incorporate relevant cohort effects into mortality studies and regularly update mortality assumptions using recent population experience. Proper consideration of cohort differences can improve mortality forecasting, life insurance valuation, pension planning, and the assessment of future longevity trends.
