Effect of Bonus-Malus Systems on Motor Insurance Premium Classification
Abstract
The study examines the effect of bonus-malus systems on motor insurance premium classification. A bonus-malus system is an experience-based pricing approach that adjusts insurance premiums according to the claims history of policyholders. Policyholders with favourable claims experience may receive premium reductions, while those with unfavourable claims experience may experience premium increases. Such systems are therefore important in differentiating motor insurance premiums according to observed claims behaviour and risk experience. The study will investigate how bonus-malus systems affect the classification of motor insurance premiums. It will examine how different claims histories and bonus-malus levels influence the premium categories assigned to policyholders. The study will also assess how changes in the number and frequency of claims affect movements between premium classes under alternative bonus-malus structures. The analysis will focus on bonus levels, malus levels, claims frequency, claims history, premium classes, premium rates, policy renewal, and motor insurance risk classification. Actuarial pricing techniques will be used to estimate premium rates under different bonus-malus levels. Alternative classification structures will be compared to determine how changes in claims experience influence the resulting premium categories and premium differentials. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Hypothetical or secondary motor insurance data will be used to construct representative policyholder scenarios with different claims histories. Claims frequency analysis, actuarial pricing techniques, transition between premium classes, premium calculations, and comparative analysis will be applied to examine the effects of bonus-malus structures. The resulting premium classifications will be compared across different claims experience scenarios. The study is expected to reveal that bonus-malus systems have a measurable effect on motor insurance premium classification. Policyholders with fewer or no claims are expected to move toward bonus categories associated with lower premiums, while policyholders with more frequent claims may move toward malus categories associated with higher premiums. The extent of premium differentiation is expected to depend on the structure of the bonus-malus system, claims frequency, the number of claim-free periods, and the premium adjustments assigned to each class. The study will provide useful information for actuaries, motor insurance companies, regulators, and researchers by demonstrating how experience-based pricing can influence motor insurance premium classification. The findings may assist insurers in designing appropriate bonus-malus structures, evaluating policyholder claims experience, improving premium rating practices, and developing clearer premium classification systems. The study may also contribute to improved understanding of actuarial approaches to claims-based motor insurance pricing. The study concludes that bonus-malus systems are important mechanisms for differentiating motor insurance premiums because they link premium classification to policyholders' claims experience. It is therefore recommended that insurers carefully evaluate bonus and malus levels when designing motor insurance pricing structures and regularly assess their effectiveness using claims data. Appropriate actuarial techniques should be applied to ensure that premium classifications adequately reflect observed claims experience and support sound motor insurance pricing.
