Effect of Claims Development Periods on Ultimate Claims Projections
Abstract
Claims development periods represent the intervals over which insurance claims are observed and tracked from their initial reporting or payment to their eventual settlement. The length and structure of these periods provide important information for understanding how claims evolve over time and for projecting the eventual cost of outstanding claims. Differences in claims development periods may therefore influence the reliability of ultimate claims projections. This study will examine the effect of claims development periods on ultimate claims projections. It will assess how different development periods influence the estimation of ultimate claim amounts and determine the extent to which variations in the periods selected affect projected claims liabilities. The study will also examine how historical claims development patterns contribute to the estimation of future claim payments. The study will focus on claims development periods, ultimate claims projections, claims development patterns, outstanding claims, reported claims, paid claims, claims settlement, loss development, actuarial reserving, and claims liabilities. Historical claims data will be organized according to different development periods to identify patterns in claim emergence and settlement. Actuarial techniques will then be applied to project ultimate claims under alternative development periods and compare the resulting estimates. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical insurance claims data will be analysed using claims development triangles, cumulative claims analysis, loss development techniques, chain-ladder methods, trend analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Ultimate claims projections generated from different claims development periods will be compared to determine variations in projected claims costs and outstanding liabilities. The study is expected to reveal that claims development periods may have a significant effect on ultimate claims projections. Shorter development periods may provide more recent claims information but may contain greater uncertainty regarding the eventual settlement of claims, while longer periods may provide a broader view of claims development experience. Differences in projected ultimate claims may depend on claims settlement patterns, reporting delays, data quality, and the stability of historical development factors. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, claims managers, reserving specialists, financial analysts, regulators, auditors, and researchers. It may provide useful information for selecting appropriate claims development periods, improving ultimate claims projections, strengthening reserve estimation, and managing uncertainty in outstanding claims liabilities. The findings may also assist insurers in evaluating how claims development experience affects actuarial reserving decisions. The study concludes that claims development periods are important considerations in projecting ultimate claims because the period over which claims experience is observed can influence the estimation of future claim payments and outstanding liabilities. It is therefore recommended that insurers and actuaries carefully evaluate claims development patterns, data quality, settlement behaviour, and the suitability of available development periods when preparing ultimate claims projections.
