Effect of Construction Contract Values on Contractors’ Insurance Exposure

Abstract

Contractors’ insurance provides financial protection against risks associated with construction projects, including property damage, accidents, equipment losses, and third-party liabilities. The value of a construction contract represents the financial scale of a project and can influence the amount of assets, activities, and potential losses exposed to insurance coverage. Understanding the relationship between contract values and insurance exposure is therefore important for accurate risk assessment and appropriate insurance planning. This study will examine the effect of construction contract values on contractors’ insurance exposure. It will assess how variations in the financial value of construction contracts influence the level of risk and potential financial obligations covered by contractors’ insurance policies. The study will also examine how differences in contract values relate to insured asset values, potential claim amounts, and overall insurance exposure. The study will focus on construction contract values, contractors’ insurance exposure, project size, insured asset values, project duration, construction activities, coverage limits, claim frequency, and potential loss amounts. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to estimate insurance exposure associated with different contract values. Exposure measures will be analysed to determine how changes in contract values affect the potential financial risks faced by insurers and contractors. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant contractors’ insurance records, construction contract values, project characteristics, insured asset values, coverage limits, claims data, and loss amounts will be analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression techniques, exposure measurement, and actuarial loss estimation methods. Different contract-value categories will be examined to determine variations in contractors’ insurance exposure. The study is expected to reveal that construction contract values may have a significant effect on contractors’ insurance exposure. Higher contract values may be associated with greater insured asset values, larger project activities, and potentially higher financial losses in the event of insured incidents. The magnitude of the relationship may vary according to project characteristics, construction activities, coverage limits, project duration, and historical claims experience. The study will be useful to actuaries, construction insurers, contractors, underwriters, project managers, insurance regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving exposure assessment and determining appropriate insurance coverage for construction projects of different financial sizes. The findings may also support better underwriting, premium estimation, risk classification, claims planning, and portfolio management. The study concludes that construction contract values are an important consideration in assessing contractors’ insurance exposure. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate contract values alongside project characteristics, insured asset values, coverage limits, claims experience, and appropriate actuarial techniques when evaluating contractors’ insurance exposure.
