Abstract
Construction defects refer to faults, deficiencies, or failures in the design, materials, workmanship, or installation of components within a construction project. The frequency with which such defects occur may influence the likelihood of property damage, structural problems, project delays, and other events that can result in insurance claims. Understanding construction defect frequencies is therefore important for assessing construction insurance exposure and estimating potential claims. This study will examine the effect of construction defect frequencies on construction insurance claims. It will assess how variations in the occurrence of construction defects influence the frequency and financial volume of insurance claims arising from construction projects. The study will also examine differences in claim experience associated with varying defect frequencies and determine the extent to which construction defects contribute to insured losses. The study will focus on construction defect frequencies, construction insurance claims, construction defects, insurance losses, claim frequency, claim severity, project risks, structural defects, workmanship defects, material defects, construction project exposure, claims experience, and actuarial analysis. Relevant construction defect, project, and insurance claims data will be examined to identify patterns in defect occurrence and their relationship with construction insurance claims. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to evaluate the effect of defect frequencies on claims experience. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. The study will be useful to actuaries, construction insurers, underwriters, contractors, construction project managers, engineers, quantity surveyors, claims managers, risk managers, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving construction insurance pricing, assessing defect-related risks, estimating claims frequency, developing underwriting assumptions, and strengthening risk management practices within construction projects. The study concludes that construction defect frequencies are important considerations in construction insurance claims because recurring defects can increase exposure to events that may generate insured losses. It is therefore recommended that insurers and construction firms maintain accurate records of construction defects and claims, regularly analyse defect patterns, incorporate relevant defect frequency assumptions into actuarial models, and strengthen quality control and risk management practices to support effective construction insurance planning.
