Effect of Destination Risk Categories on Travel Insurance Loss Estimates

Abstract

Travel insurance provides financial protection against losses arising from unexpected events such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, baggage losses, and travel interruptions. Destination risk categories are used to reflect differences in the level and nature of risks associated with various travel locations. Accurate classification of destinations is therefore important for estimating potential losses and supporting appropriate actuarial assessment of travel insurance exposures. This study will examine the effect of destination risk categories on travel insurance loss estimates. It will assess how differences in the risk classification of travel destinations influence the estimated losses associated with travel insurance policies. The study will also examine variations in claim frequency and claim severity across different destination risk categories. The study will focus on destination risk categories, travel insurance claim frequency, claim severity, medical expenses, trip cancellation losses, baggage losses, policy duration, and expected loss estimates. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to assess the relationship between destination classifications and expected insurance losses. Probability distributions and loss modelling approaches will be used to estimate potential losses associated with different destination risk categories. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant travel insurance claims data, destination classifications, claim amounts, policy durations, and exposure information will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency and severity analysis, probability distributions, loss ratio analysis, and actuarial loss estimation techniques. Comparative analysis will be conducted across different destination risk categories to determine variations in expected losses. The study is expected to reveal that destination risk categories may have a significant effect on travel insurance loss estimates. Higher-risk destination categories may be associated with greater claim frequencies, higher claim severities, or both, resulting in higher estimated losses. The magnitude of these differences may vary according to the type of travel-related risk, duration of coverage, and nature of the insured exposure. The study will be useful to travel insurers, actuaries, underwriters, travel agencies, insurance regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving destination risk classification and strengthening the estimation of expected travel insurance losses. The findings may also support more appropriate premium assessment, claims management, portfolio monitoring, and risk-based insurance pricing. The study concludes that destination risk categories are an important consideration in estimating potential travel insurance losses. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly review destination classifications and incorporate relevant claims experience, exposure information, and actuarial loss models when estimating losses associated with travel insurance policies.
