Effect of Disability Incidence Tables on Income Protection Insurance Pricing

Abstract

Disability incidence tables provide structured information on the rates at which disability events occur among individuals at different ages, occupational groups, or other relevant categories. They are important actuarial tools in income protection insurance because they provide estimates of the likelihood that insured individuals may become disabled and require income replacement benefits. The accuracy and suitability of disability incidence assumptions can therefore influence the estimation of expected claims and the premiums required for income protection insurance. This study will examine the effect of disability incidence tables on income protection insurance pricing. It will assess how the use of different disability incidence rates influences the calculation of premiums for income protection policies. The study will also compare premium estimates generated from alternative disability incidence tables and determine the extent to which variations in incidence assumptions affect insurance pricing outcomes. The study will focus on disability incidence tables, income protection insurance pricing, disability rates, disability claims, income replacement benefits, claim frequency, claim duration, occupational risk, premium determination, actuarial assumptions, insurance liabilities, and risk assessment. Relevant disability experience data will be examined to identify patterns in disability incidence and their implications for income protection insurance pricing. Actuarial techniques will be applied to evaluate the effect of disability incidence assumptions on expected claims and premium requirements. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Tables with higher disability incidence rates may result in higher expected claim frequencies and increased premium requirements, while lower incidence assumptions may produce lower expected claims and premium estimates. The magnitude of the effect may depend on the age and occupational characteristics of insured persons, benefit levels, claim duration, termination rates, policy terms, and other actuarial assumptions. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, underwriters, pricing analysts, claims managers, regulators, employers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for selecting appropriate disability incidence assumptions, estimating expected claims, developing sustainable income protection premiums, and improving actuarial pricing practices. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly review disability incidence experience, select appropriate incidence tables, update actuarial assumptions when necessary, and conduct sensitivity analysis to support accurate and sustainable premium determination.
